A 2008 cross country All-American who will be an important factor in the distance races during his final collegiate season. The 2007 Pac-10 cross country individual champion and the league’s Athlete of the Year. An experienced competitor with three career All-America awards.
2008-09: An All-American in cross country and outdoor track and field. Outdoors - Teamed with Galen Rupp to form an impressive 1-2 punch in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Captured the 5,000 meters at the Pepsi Team Invitational (14:05.42) and the Oregon Relays in a personal best 13:36.25 (No. 8 all-time at Oregon) before the championship season, where he was second in the Pac-10 (13:52.79) and eighth at the NCAA Championships (14:11.45) to score a point for the national runners-up. Also scored in the 10,000 meters at the Pac-10 meet, finishing second in 29:03.47. Earlier in the season, ran a personal best 10K of 28:28.83 at Stanford, No. 4 all-time at Oregon. Ran third leg on Oregon's collegate record 4xmile relay team that timed 16:03.24 at the Oregon Twilight. Also won the 1,500 meters in the UCLA dual meet in 3:47.76. Indoors - NCAA qualifier at both 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Was 10th nationally in the 5,000 (14:07.81) and 11th in the 3,000 (8:06.12). Season bests in both events rank in the UO all-time top five. Was No. 3 at 5,000 meters (13:41.66 at the Husky Classic) and No. 4 at 3,000 meters (7:55.27 at the New Balance Invitational). Cross Country - All-American for the second straight year. Had four top-10 cross country finishes in 2008 and three in the top five. Helped lead Oregon to its second straight NCAA Championship with a ninth-place finish. Was the third Duck to cross the finish line running 29:43.4 for his second-straight ninth-place finish at the national championships and third career All-America award. Ran second behind teammate Galen Rupp to help Oregon win its third consecutive NCAA West Regional, crossing the line in 28:32.31. It was the best regional finish of his career. Took fifth at the Pac-10 championships, where he was the third Duck to cross the finish line (23:42.50) as Oregon won its third straight Pac-10 title. Helped lead the Ducks to the Bill Dellinger Invitational title with his fifth-place finish (24:14.41), and was the second Oregon runner across the line. 2007-08: All-American and Pac-10 Athlete of the Year in cross country. Claimed second career All-America honor by placing ninth (29:57) in his third NCAA trip. Was named the Pac-10 Athlete of the Year for winning his first Pac-10 title (22:55) and leading the Ducks to the team championship. Two weeks later, helped the Ducks repeat as the NCAA West Region champions with a third place finish (30:04). Minor injuries led to a quiet spring where he only ran the 5,000 meters twice - at the Cardinal Invitational and at the Pac-10 Championships. Season Bests: Outdoors - 5,000 Meters - 14:26.29, Cardinal Invitational, Stanford, Calif. (5/4/08).
2006-07: NCAA Qualifier in the 10,000 Meters. In his first track season in the UO uniform, capped year with strong NCAA 10,000 meter debut (ninth, 29:13.43). A month earlier, helped team win Pac-10 Championship with top finishes in the 10,000 (third, 29:11.66) and 5,000 meters (seventh, 14:17.02). Earlier in outdoor season, ran an NCAA provisional mark in his 10,000 meter career debut at the Stanford Invitational (29:00.52). Did not compete indoors. In cross country, his sixth-place Pac-10 Championships finish helped Oregon win its 14th Pac-10 Championship. Also scored for Ducks in championship slate in the West Regional and NCAA Championships as squad finished first and fifth, respectively. 2005-06: Redshirt season. Competed unattached in three West Coast outdoor meets. Clocked a two-second personal best in the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational (fifth, 13:55.18). In mid-April, kicked to win in Bill McChesney Jr. Memorial Twilight Mile in the Oregon Invitational (4:04.94). Did not race cross country. Season Bests: 1,500 Meters - 3:49.07, Oregon Preview, Eugene, Ore. (3/18/06); Mile - 4:04.94, Oregon Invitational, Eugene, Ore. (4/22/06); 5,000 Meters - 13:55.18, Stanford Invitational, Stanford, Calif. (3/31/06).
Before Oregon: All-American in cross country at New Mexico, where he also earned All-Mountain West Conference all-league honors in the 800 Meters (third, 1:50.76) and 1,500 meters (second, 3:52.87). Outdoor season best in the 1,500 meters was 3:46.53. Indoors, scored for squad in Mountain West Championships in the mile (sixth) and also led off runner-up distance medley relay. In cross country, earned All-America honors in the NCAA Championships (14th, 31:17) as New Mexico finished ninth as a team. In Mountain West Conference Championships, won the individual title (24:44) and helped the team to third place.
Prep: All-American. As a senior, led the U.S. in the 2-mile (8:45.44) with his winning time from the 2004 Outdoor Championships in Raleigh, N.C. - also the ninth-fastest time in U.S. prep history. Three weeks later in early July, ran a mile personal best (4:02.65) in Portland, and ranked second nationally. As a senior in cross country, finished third in the 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships after he won the West Regional by three seconds. Won 2003 5A state cross country title by almost 1 1/2 minutes. Previously attended Kapenguria High School in Kenya where he also won the Kenyan national high school 1,500 Meter title.
Personal: Sociology major. Minoring in business administration. Lived in Albuquerque in high school with his uncle Simon Sawe, a professional runner. Originally from Eldoret, Kenya, and speaks English and Swahili. His older brother, Duncan Kibet, won the 2006 San Jose Half-Marathon in 1:00.22 - the second-fastest time ever on U.S. soil.
