Selected in the 42nd round (1,268 overall) by the Cleveland Indians in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
CAREER SUMMARY
Oregon’s three-year (2009-11) starting shortstop KC Serna was the eighth Oregon Duck selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when he was taken in the 42nd round by the Cleveland Indians on June 8.
For three years, Serna was part of the Ducks’ middle infield tandem with Danny Pulfer (Arizona Diamondbacks, 19th round).
The native of Ventura, Calif., was part of Oregon’s original class as the Ducks brought back baseball for 2009 after the program was discontinued following the 1981 season.
In three years at Oregon, Serna was named to the 2010 Norwich All-Regional Team, and was also a 2010 Pac-10 honorable mention selection following his sophomore campaign.
During his career in an UO uniform, Serna batted .276 in 161 games. His 163 career hits rank second all-time in program history, while his 93 career runs scored rank seventh.
In addition, Serna’s 26 career doubles rank third all-time while his 10 home runs are the most any UO player hit from 2009-11.
Serna, the 1,268th overall selection of the 2011 MLB Draft, also used his speed to steal 35 bases in his career, a total that ranks second all-time at Oregon. Defensively, Serna helped turn 92 double plays in his last three years for the Ducks.
During his sophomore season in 2010, Serna led the Ducks batting .348 with 81 hits – a UO single-season record – as well as 13 doubles, 37 runs driven in, 45 runs scored, 14 stolen bases and a .476 slugging percentage.
Serna was Oregon’s 36th draft selection in the history of the program and the 15th pick since UO baseball returned to the diamond in 2009. Serna was also the fourth UO position player to be drafted since 2009.

AS A JUNIOR • 2011
Batted a modest .232 (41-for-177) during his junior year…finished second on the club with 34 runs scored…drove in 22 runs, recorded eight doubles and two home runs…was walked on 24 occasions and led the Ducks with 12 stolen bases with a perfect 12-for-12 mark…totaled 145 assists and helped the Ducks turn 30 double plays…started 49 games at shortstop and at the end of the season was hitting in the No. 7 hole…finished the season with nine multiple-hit games and seven multiple-RBI games…produced nine 2-out RBIs…in Pac-10 play batted .241 and drove in 10 runs…in the final 14 games of the season batted .304 (14-for-46) with seven RBIs, 10 runs scored, four doubles and five stolen bases…in the final series against No. 6 Oregon State batted .400 (4-for-10) with three RBIs and two runs scored…in the series opener against the Beavers as Oregon nursed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh, gave the Ducks a cushion after crushing a towering two-run homer to left field on Sam Gaviglio’s 1-1 delivery, helping UO to a 4-1 victory…also went 2-for-4 with one RBI in a 6-0 victory that completed the sweep of the Beavers (05/29)…hit .417 (5-for-12) with four runs, two doubles and three RBIs as Oregon took 2-of-3 from Stanford (05/13-05/15)…Serna’s bases-loaded, two-run double scored what proved to be the game-winning run in Oregon’s 6-1 victory over Wichita State (03/27)…was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs – including producing the game-winning run - as Oregon upset No. 3 Oregon State 7-2 in Corvallis for the Ducks first victory at Goss Stadium since the program was reinstated (05/03).
SUMMER 2010
Was
the starting shortstop for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod
League – the top summer collegiate league in the country…was the
starting shortstop for the Western Division at the 2010 Cape Cod
All-Star Game held at Fenway Park in Boston…helps the Commodores to a
second-place finish in the Western Division…hit .255 with 22 runs
scored, 18 RBIs, seven doubles and one triple…drew 17 walks and stole
seven bases.
AS A SOPHOMORE • 2010
Oregon’s everyday
shortstop and leadoff batter…was named Pac-10 Honorable Mention after a
breakout season… led the Ducks in average (.348), on-base percentage
(.419), hits (81, T-6th Pac-10), total bases (111) and stolen bases (14,
7th Pac-10)…scored 45 runs and added 37 RBIs, 13 doubles, one triple
and five home runs…was walked 22 times and had a .476 slugging
percentage…led the Ducks with 25 multiple-hit games and produced nine
multiple-RBI games…tied for UO’ longest hitting streak – 10 games – from
March 2-20…during that stretch helped Oregon to a 9-1 record, batting
.409 from the plate with nine runs scored, six RBIs, six stolen bases,
one double, two walks and 30 assists…was named to the Norwich
All-Regional Team after batting .533 in the postseason with five runs
scored, two RBIs, one home two walks and one stolne base…season
highlights include pacing Oregon with his bat and glove in an 8-4
victory at Fresno State, going 3-for-5 from the plate with a RBI, while
helping turn 3-of-4 double plays (3/6)…was 3-for-4 with two runs scored
in a 5-2 win at No. 22 Stanford (4/9)…led the Ducks with a 2-for-4,
four-RBI performance that included a two-run homer and two-run double in
a 7-2 win at Gonzaga (4/20)…was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, a double and
stolen base in Oregon’s 12-2 win over USC (4/23)…was 2-for-3 with three
runs scored in Oregon’s 9-4 non-conference victory over Oregon State
(4/27)…blasted a leadoff home run in back-to-back games at Washington
(5/21-5/22)...twice this season has homered in back-to-back games, first
at Gonzaga (4/20-21) and second at Washington (5/21-22)…in the sixth
inning of the first game of the NCAA Regional against No. 17 UConn,
buried the first pitch of his at-bat over the left field wall to tie the
game at 2-2 before Oregon went on to win 5-3 (6/4)…was 3-for-3 in
Oregon’s 4-3 victory over No. 17 Connecticut in the elimination game
(6/6).
SUMMER 2009
The starting shortstop and hit in
the top of the order for the Mankato Moondogs of the Northwoods
League…helped lead Mankato to a 39-29 overall record including a
postseason appearance, but the Moondogs fell in the NWL North Divisional
Series to the Rochester Honkers…named to the 2009 NWL All-Star Team,
Serna ended his summer by breaking Mankato’s single-season record for
stolen bases with 25 swipes…hit .314 (55-for-175) over the summer with
30 runs scored, 16 RBIs, 16 walks, seven doubles and two triples.
AS A FRESHMAN • 2009
Oregon’s
everyday shortstop, started 52 games for the Ducks...hit .228
(41-for-180) with 14 runs, five doubles, one triple, 14 walks and nine
stolen bases...led the team with 19 RBIs and three home
runs...defensively, led UO with 145 assists and 31 double plays
turned...finished the year with a .931 fielding percentage...hit .375
with the bases loaded and .455 with a runner on third and less than two
outs...had a .427 success rate advancing runners...also made two relief
appearances on the mound, pitching a total of one inning...in Oregon’s
historic season-opening 5-3 win at Saint Mary’s (2/20), was 2-for-5 with
two RBIs...also recorded the first double of the modern era...went on a
six-game hitting streak from March 1-7, batting .320 (8-for-25), with
one double, one triple and three runs scored...his one-out, bases-loaded
walk-off single gave Oregon a 3-2, 13-inning victory over Santa Clara
(3/7)...in his first appearance on the mound was handed the ball with
one down and the potential tying run on second base in the bottom of the
ninth, sandwiched a pair of outs around a base-on-balls to earn his
first career save in a 6-5 victory at Nevada (3/13)...was 2-for-5 with a
season-high four RBIs, which included his first collegiate home run vs.
Sacramento State (3/24)...patiently waited out a two-out, bases-loaded
walk to bring in UO’s first run in its 3-2, 10-inning victory over
Oregon State (3/28)...hit the second home run of his career vs. Stanford
(4/5)...was 2-for-4 with a solo home run - his third of the season -
and a stolen base in the Ducks’ 5-3 victory at California (4/18)...his
RBI sacrifice fly proved to be the game winner in Oregon’s 3-2 victory
over UCLA (5/1).
HIGH SCHOOL
A 2008 graduate of St.
Bonaventure High School...a three-sport athlete for the Seraphs, played
football, soccer and baseball...in 2008 was the starting shortstop for
St. Bonaventure, leading the team to a 26-5 record...also pitched his
way to a 9-1 record on the mound with 76 strikeouts...at the plate, hit
.500 and produced 30 RBIs to go along with 16 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home
runs and 15 walks...set school records for career games played, RBIs,
hits, doubles, steals and runs scored...on the gridiron, quarterbacked
the St. Bonaventure football team to a 14-1 record, including a trip to
the CIF State Division III Championship Bowl game, where he scored two
touchdowns en route to a 35-21 victory...the Seraphs ended the year as
the seventh-ranked team in the state according to MaxPreps.com, while he
finished the year with 1,111 yards of total offense and 12 touchdowns.
