5 Things To Watch: Oregon State
09/19/25 | Football
The Ducks host the Beavers in Autzen Stadium on Saturday (noon, Big Ten Network).
EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 6 Oregon football team will wrap up nonconference play for the 2025 regular season by taking on a storied rival Saturday.
The Ducks will host Oregon State in Autzen Stadium, a noon kickoff on the Big Ten Network. The B1G Tailgate pregame show will originate from outside the south gate of the stadium prior to the game.
Oregon returns to nonconference play after winning its Big Ten opener last week at Northwestern. The Beavers are winless through three games so far this season.
The Ducks lead the all-time series between the two, 69-49-10, including 35-21-6 in Eugene. Oregon is looking to extend a two-game win streak in the rivalry.
Jeff Levering will provide play by play of Saturday's game for Big Ten Network, with analysis from Jake Butt and sideline reporting by Brooke Fletcher.
Some storylines to watch once the game begins …
1. With the two teams no longer playing in the same conference, the rivalry series has a different flavor than in years past. But it's still salty.
In practice this week, UO coach Dan Lanning had staffers and program alums such as Ryan Walk and Koa Ka'ai address the players about what this rivalry means to folks around the state.
"I think all of college football feels different the last few years, but this game still means a lot to us, for sure," Lanning said. "You know, state (bragging) rights, it's the opportunity to play a team in-state, and it's just down the road. A lot of fans grew up either Ducks or Beavs, even in our community in this state. So this game means a lot to a lot of people; certainly means a lot to the team."
2. After tangling with Northwestern run-focused offense last week, the Ducks will have to defend big-armed Beavers quarterback Maalik Murphy on Saturday afternoon.
Murphy is averaging nearly 300 passing yards per game, and his six touchdown passes are one shy of OSU's total from all of last season.
"One of the strongest arms we've seen," Lanning said. "I think he's got a cannon; delivered a deep ball last weekend against Texas Tech, it was really impressive. So, he's got a strong arm. He can throw it on a rope. You know, that's one thing that really stands out."
3. The Ducks will defend the OSU passing attack with a secondary that got some reinforcements last week, transfer Theran Johnson.
A senior, Johnson returned to face his former school at Northwestern, making his UO debut after missing the first two games of the season.
"I thought Theran did a good job of executing his job," Lanning said. "We were probably a little hesitant (in not bringing him back until week three) just to make sure that he was fresh and felt good when he was out there, but I thought he did well."
4. The Ducks did a lot of things well last week at Northwestern. But Lanning wanted to see them finish better, after allowing the last 14 points of the game.
Granted, Oregon had a 34-0 lead at the time. But the Ducks want to play all the way to the final whistle, regardless of the score or the personnel group in the game.
"We want to be a team that wins the fourth quarter, regardless of who it is and what the situation is," Lanning aid. "You want to be able to take advantage of those moments."
5. Oregon will wear special uniforms for the game, called the "Shoe Duck" look as an homage to Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his legendary partnership with his former track coach with the Ducks, Bill Bowerman.
"Phil and coach Bowerman have done so much for this program, and it's very rare that we get the opportunity to say, we want to do something in support of them, and recognizing that relationship of a player and a coach and what they created," Lanning said. "The jerseys are super impressive and there is a whole lot of meaning throughout that.
"Ultimately, I think if anybody would have asked Phil in advance, he'd say no thanks. But when we were able to present that to him, I think it meant a lot to him because of what it stood for. It wasn't just about Phil, it's about that partnership between him, the coach, and how that grew into an unbelievable brand and created a lot of success for a lot of people — obviously Oregon, but also a lot of people across the world."
