Rivalry Win Has Ducks 4-0 Entering B1G Title Rematch

Oregon heads to Penn State next week after remaining unbeaten this fall with a 41-7 win Saturday over Oregon State.
The Ducks will take a 4-0 record back on the road and back into the thick of the Big Ten title chase next week, after winning a rivalry showdown with Oregon State on Saturday at a sold-out Autzen Stadium, 41-7. The UO football team won its third straight over OSU, and extended the nation's longest active nonconference home winning streak to 37 games.
No. 6 Oregon (4-0) won by at least 20 points for the fourth time this fall, and now can look ahead to a road matchup with its foe from last season's Big Ten Championship, Penn State. The Ducks broke Saturday's game open after being tied 7-7 through one quarter, overcame five penalties after not being flagged once the week before at Northwestern, and finally allowed a quarterback sack for the first time this season.
"We've got to be cleaner in some of our issues there, from a penalty standpoint, just our operation overall," said UO coach Dan Lanning, whose team's game against the Nittany Lions will be the site for ESPN's "College GameDay" pregame show. "But ultimately a dominant performance, and really a challenge for us heading into this next week as we go to Penn State."
Dante Moore gave more fuel to the Heisman Trophy chatter emerging around him by completing 21-of-31 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns Saturday, his scoring throws going to four different receivers. Atticus Sappington hit two field goals and James Ferguson-Reynolds converted a fake punt to highlight the effort on special teams, while Eugene native Bryce Boettcher led the UO defense with 10 tackles — nine in the first half.
"This was a special one," Boettcher said. "Leading up to the game, it was ultimate preparation. And then I was definitely on one today, if you ask any of my teammates. Obviously played hard, and it was a good team win."
The Ducks burst out of the gates Saturday, scoring on their opening drive when Moore hit freshman receiver Dakorien Moore with a 22-yard touchdown pass less than three minutes into the game. But the Beavers pushed back, and tied it 7-7 with a 64-yard touchdown drive late in the first quarter.
In the end, that drive produced almost half of Oregon State's total yardage in the game. After allowing 76 yards in the opening quarter, the UO defense allowed 28 in the second, 14 in the third and 29 in the fourth — OSU's 43 second-half yards of offense being less than the Beavers' total on their early scoring drive.
"It's still a game that means a ton," Lanning said of the in-state matchup with a former conference rival. "What is this, the 129th meeting? And it's one we take a lot of pride in. It means a ton to our players."
The Ducks also took pride Saturday in playing for UO alum and Nike co-founder Phil Knight, the inspiration for the "Shoe Duck" uniforms Oregon wore against the Beavers. Oregon's quarterback seemed to take that particularly to heart — after completing touchdown passes to Kenyon Sadiq in the second quarter Saturday, Jeremiah McClellan in the third and Gary Bryant Jr. in the fourth, Dante Moore said the Ducks presented a game ball to Knight after the final whistle.
"As a team, when adversity hits we know how to bounce back," Moore said. "That's from just going three-and-out, that's from a turnover, things that happen. Of course, down the road there's gonna be things that don't go our way. I feel like overall, we've been facing adversity pretty well when it happens.
"And we're just having fun with the game of football. At the end of the day forget stats, forget fame, forget many things; we just dream about being at the University of Oregon, and we're having fun. We're flying around and playing for our brothers."
Now that attention turns to Penn State, which is off to a 3-0 start this season. The Nittany Lions will be playing their Big Ten opener against the Ducks, and they'll do so with extra time to prepare after having a bye Saturday.
"They're really talented," Lanning said. "Schematically as challenging as anybody who we'll play, as far as what they present on both sides of the ball. They play with relentless effort; they play well on special teams; coach (James) Franklin's teams are always well coached. So it will be a real challenge for us, but one we're excited to attack."
For as strong as the Ducks have looked most of their first four games, they'll still looking to put together a full 60-minute effort, after finishing slow last week at Northwestern and then getting off to a slower start than usual over the totality of Saturday's first quarter. Their run defense, statistically in the middle of the pack nationally, will be in the spotlight after the Nittany Lions ran for nearly 300 yards in last season's conference title game."
"I think we've done a solid job (so far this season), but there's always something to improve," said UO edge defender Teitum Tuioti, who had 1.5 tackles for loss Saturday to give him 4.5 this season. "That's a great thing about our defense — we're always ready to 'go see the doctor,' like coach Lanning says, and just continue to grow."
For four weeks, the Ducks have been successful at focusing on their opponent at hand, and not peaking ahead to the Penn State game as so many eyes externally have done. But when Saturday's win over Oregon State was finished, Oregon quickly turned the page.
"The switch," Lanning said within minutes of Saturday's game going final, "is already flipped."
