Oregon Heartbroken in Second Overtime at Washington St.
10/19/14 | Women's Soccer
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State scored in the 107th minute in the second overtime to give the Cougars (8-2-3, 3-2-1) a 1-0 win over Oregon (6-6-2, 2-3-1) Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman, Wash. Mariah Powers was credited with the goal even though it appeared to be an own goal.
How It Happened: Both teams had a handful of opportunities that were near goals throughout regulation time. In the 2nd minute Lilly Archer accurately delivered a corner kick into a crowd of Ducks in the goal area, and the ball quickly found its way to Bri Pugh. Pugh played the high bouncing ball out of the air, but her shot hit the crossbar and kept Oregon off the scoreboard.
Washington State's Kourtney Guetlein provided the next notable chance of the game in the 41st minute when a Cougar crossed the ball into the box. A Washington State player ran towards the incoming ball and acted like she was going to play it, but she let the ball go through at the last second – providing a golden opportunity for Guetlein. She was wide open from eight yards out, but her shot went high and the game remained scoreless.
The Ducks almost got on the board again in the 72nd minute when Brooke Strawn hit the right post off a shot from 20 yards out near the left corner of the penalty box. Similar to Pugh's chance in the first half, Strawn's shot went careening off the post and a Washington State defender was able to clear the ball and eliminate the chance for a rebound.
The golden goal came in the 107th minute when the Cougars' Beau Bremer found a cutting Powers in the box. Powers appeared to get a small touch on the ball, but it was Riley Smith's attempt to clear the ball right after Powers' touch that ultimately gave the Cougars the goal.
By The Numbers: The Ducks and Cougars were relatively even on the stat sheet. Oregon held the advantage in shots, 12-10, but Washington State led in corners, 6-4.
The Cougars were called for offsides five times, while Oregon was only called for the violation twice. Washington State's offsides were a by-product of their focus in primarily the first half of trying to play through balls on the Oregon defense.
Ducks Kept Possession: Although there were periods during the game where Washington State gathered momentum and strung together a couple shots, the Ducks held possession and advanced the ball effectively throughout the bulk of the game.
Pugh, Strawn, Shanelle Simien and Kiyomi Cook all took long-range shots from 25-35 yards out over the course of the game that kept the Washington State keeper occupied.
Key Quote: Head Coach Kat Mertz
“Disappointed with the result today. I thought we were the better team and we had a lot of opportunities to score. I am proud of the team and the way we played, we just didn't get the result we were looking for.”
Next Up: UO returns home next weekend and will welcome USC to Papé Field on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. The Ducks will then play No. 1 UCLA on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
