Second Overtime Dooms Ducks Again
10/25/14 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – UO (6-7-2, 2-4-1) suffered another double-overtime loss and fell 1-0 to USC (9-5-2, 3-4-0) at Papé Field thanks to a goal in the 104th minute from the Trojans' Sydney Sladek.
How It Happened: USC found the back of the net in the early stages of the second overtime. The Ducks were dispossessed in the middle of the field in the 104th minute, and the Trojans quickly took advantage of the turnover. Sladek's chip shot from 25 yards out found its way over a leaping Abby Steele and gave the Trojans the golden goal.
Both teams had opportunities throughout the game to keep it from going to overtime, but neither were able to convert. Most notably for the Ducks was Bri Pugh's chance in the 90th minute right before regulation time ended. Pugh faced a tough angle in the left-hand area of the box, but she only had the keeper to beat. Her shot went low and near post, right into the gut of the Trojan keeper.
USC's edge in shots (18-13) wasn't totally indicative of the back-and-forth affair. The Trojans almost put one in the back of the net at the tail end of the first half when they recorded two corners and three shots in a 1:08-minute span, but the Ducks also threatened to win the game in the first overtime when they possessed the ball for the better portion of the 10 minutes of extra time.
What It Means: The loss drops the Ducks to 2-4-1 in Pac-12 play. They will enter Sunday's match 10th place in the conference.
By The Numbers: Pugh led the team in shots (6) for the 10th time this season…The team forced the USC keeper into making seven saves – the Ducks' second-highest total of the season…The Trojans attempted seven corner kicks to Oregon's zero…Tonight was UO's seventh overtime game of the season which is the most in school history for a single season.
Notables: Abby Steele was back in the net for the Ducks for the first time in just over two games…Kiyomi Cook was second on the team in shots with two.
Next Up: The Ducks will shake off tonight and prepare for their game with No. 1 UCLA (14-0-2,6-0-1) at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Papé Field. The Bruins defeated Oregon State 3-0 tonight in Corvallis.
