Top-Ranked UCLA Defeats Oregon 5-0
10/26/14 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – UCLA showed why they are the No. 1-ranked team in the country Sunday afternoon as they dispatched the Ducks 5-0 at Papé Field. Sam Mewis led the Bruins with two goals and two assists.
How It Happened: The Bruins scored their first goal in the 10th minute when Caprice Dydasco received a pass from Annie Alvarado in the left side of the box and converted the goal with a far-corner blast. UCLA tagged another one on the Ducks a little over a minute later in the 11th minute when Mewis crossed the ball into the box and found the leg of Kylie McCarthy who finished and made the score 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Taylor Smith headed home a cross from Zoey Goralski in the 40th minute to increase the Bruin lead to 3-0.
The Ducks responded coming out of the locker room at the half and played their best soccer of the day in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Bri Pugh almost got Oregon on the board in the 55th minute with a well-struck shot in the box, but the Bruins' second-team NSCAA All-America keeper, Katelyn Rowland made a diving save that kept the Ducks off the score sheet.
Mewis – the Bruins' leader in goals – scored in the 63rd minute and 78th minute to give UCLA the 5-0 win. Gabbi Miranda was accredited with the assist on her first goal, but it was primarily Mewis' dribbling that got her into open space just inside the top of the box and allowed her the opportunity to unleash a rocket of a shot into the back of the net. Her second goal came off a cross from Taylor Alderete.
Notes: The Ducks were outshot by the Bruins 17-4…Mewis also leads the Pac-12 with 13 goals and 35 points…UCLA has shutout their opponents in 12 of their 15 wins this year…
Quote: Head Coach Kat Mertz
“This is the measuring stick for us. We want to be in a spot a couple years down the road where we are No. 1 in the nation. In order to do that, we have to be playing against these players and figure out what we need to do better and what we can improve upon.”
Next Up: The Ducks will travel to the Bay Area next weekend and square off with Stanford on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. and then California on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.
