No. 13 Cal Beats UO Soccer, 5-1
10/31/04 | Women's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. - The Ducks capped their final weekend of road action Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 loss to No. 13-ranked California at Edwards Stadium.
California's Carolina Lea opened scoring just 18 seconds into the first minute on a 10-yard shot, on an assist by Dania Cabello. The Bears added two more first-half goals by Liz Eisenberg at 16:57 on an assist by Chioma Lawe, and by Jenny Wendell at 34:01 on a penalty kick. The Bears added another goal early in the second half by Sierra Schelsinger at 46:58 on an assist by Nadia Al-Lami. In the second half, Oregon freshman Gennaka Fox scored her first career goal at 57:57 from eight yards center. The Los Angeles area native from El Monte scored on a quick, reactive play as she collected a short aerial pass with her thigh, then immediately took the shot while the ball was still in the air. The play was started by an assist by fellow frosh Kami Kapaku who won a battle for a header from 8 yards behind and passed the ball to Fox. "I've been trying to score for a while, so it was a little odd to get the chance so quickly (she came in less than a minute before), Fox said, "but I'll take what I can get. I'm getting more comfortable on the field with my teammates - the college game is a little different since it's faster and more physical than what I'm used to." Later in the game, the Bears capped scoring with a final goal at 82:50 by Katie Ratican at 82:50 who scored from the center left side and shot an arc'er to the right center net high from 14 yards center. The play was unassisted, since she had started the play on a long dribble sequence from 20 yards out, and went laterally from right to left. Single shots for the Ducks came from Fox and sophomores Sabrina DeMonte and Rachel Grushkin, and Fox and Grushkin each had single shots on goal. In goal, Oregon junior Domenique Lainez played the first half and allowed three goals and had one save, and sophomore Emily Marrer had four saves and allowed one goal in the second half. Sunday's assist was Kapaku's first of the season and stood as her ninth point of the season - tops on the team. The Wailuku, Hawai'i native also paces the team in goals (4), shots (32), and shots on goal (22). With two games remaining this season, she is approaching Duck all-time top-10 season lists for goals (10th is 5), shots (10th is 37), and game-winning goals (eight-way tie for fourth with 2). Team-wise Sunday, Cal held advantages in shots (19-4), corner kicks (4-0) and offsides (7-1), and Oregon held edges in saves (6-1), and fouls (5-4). Cal's leading shot taker Sunday was Liz Eisenberg (5) and four Bears had a team-leading two shots on goal. Cal goaltender Ashley Suplrizo (45:26, 1 save) started the match, and was relieved early in the second half by Anna Key who allowed Fox's goal and had no saves. Ranked 13th nationally by Soccer America and 19th by Soccer Buzz this week, Cal improved to 10-4-3, and 3-2-2 in the Pac-10, and Oregon fell to 3-12-2 overall and 0-6-1 in Pac-10 play. Sunday's outcome avenged a 2-0 shutout win by the Ducks over the Bears in Eugene last fall, and Cal owns a 7-1 advantage in the series that began in 1996. Looking ahead, the Ducks return to Eugene and Pape' Field for the final weekend of the regular season, and host Arizona State, Fri., Nov. 5 at 7 pm, and top-20 ranked Arizona, Sun, Nov. 7 at 1 pm.
