Duck Soccer Ties Arizona State 1-1 in 2OT
11/05/04 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE - The University of Oregon women's soccer team opened the final weekend of the regular season with a spirited 1-1 double-overtime tie vs. NCAA Tournament veteran Arizona State, on a chilly Friday night at Pape' Field.
Arizona State took advantage of an early miscue in the 10th minute when a lone Duck defender dribbled the ball to the right just outside the 18-yard box line, but was sideswiped by ASU's Katie Leahy. The Oregon defender fell, and Leahy took immediate possession and pushed forward several steps, then took a 15-yard line drive shot on goal. UO junior goalkeeper Domenique Lainez blocked the ball eight yards out from the left center goal, but the ball rolled off to her left and slowly into the goal.
The visitors' scored sparked the Duck offense into action, as subsequent first-half near conversions by junior midfielder Carlie Ashcraft hit the crossbar from 30 yards out at 25:20, and another sailed left at 34:03. Freshman teammate Kami Kapaku also had two solid chances in the latter first half that went wide right and left.
In the second half, the Duck offense finally converted a chance at 68:47 on junior midfielder Cristan Higa?s first converted penalty kick of her career. Less than a moment before, the Ducks had subbed in freshman Emily Danner up top for Kapaku and seconds later Danner was taken down on a possession from behind by ASU defender Stephanie Abner near 12 yards center, which led to the ref's whistle and Duck PK chance.
"We battled to the end tonight, just like we're doing this whole season," Higa said, "and I think we proved that despite our record that we have a good team. At this point, ASU might have expected us to show up and give them the game, but we we're still playing for pride. There was no pressure on us, and we were played hard for our seniors and ourselves."
From that point, the two teams combined for several other solid attempts, but neither could convert. Oregon posted the last two shots of the regulation by freshman defender Dylann Tharp from 6 yards wide right into a crowd that rebounded off, and by Kapaku high from 17 yards center.
ASU's Liz Bogus took the only shot by either team in the first overtime period at 90:30. In the second extra stanza, Oregon sophomore forward Andrea Valadez and Ashcraft attempted single shots, as did ASU's Brittany Cooper in the closing seconds.
The outcome gave the Ducks a 2-5-2 mark all-time vs. ASU, and a 1-2-2 record at home in Eugene in the series dating back to 1996.
"I'm very disappointed because I thought we should have won," Lainez said. "I wish there was a third overtime because we would have pulled it out. We wanted to try and make up for that early goal, and we did exactly that with the penalty shot. Our plan coming in was to battle hard and keep them from winning, and we were partially successful."
Six Ducks combined for the team's 17 shots - UO's second-highest output of ?04 behind its 3-2 OT home win in early September vs. Weber State (24). Higa and Ashcraft tied for the individual lead in shots (4), and Higa came away with a game-high three shots on goal.
"I think with a few girls injured, some of the offensive responsibility fell on me as an upperclassmen to help take charge," Higa said. "Overall, we've been trying to press forward more, and focused on adding more offense this whole week."
The goal stood as Higa's first of the season and second of her career, with the other score coming at San Francisco her sophomore season in a 2-1 win. Friday's offensive effort also improved on previous career bests in shots (4) and shots on goal (2) - marks she tallied once each in both 2002 and 2003.
In goal, Duck junior keeper Domenique Lainez registered five saves in her second Pac-10 tie at home the past three weeks after a 1-1 outcome vs. Washington State., Fri., Oct. 22.
In the final team comparisons, Oregon held edges in shots (17-10) and corner kicks (4-2), ASU finished with an advantage in fouls (21-10), and the two teams tied in shots on goal (10-10) and saves (5).
Arizona State's leading shot takers were forward Liz Bogus and midfielder Manya Makoski who each took three shots, while Makoski and forward Katie Leahy tied for the shots on goal lead (2). Goalkeeper Kim Bingham came up with five saves.
In this week's polls, the Sun Devils were unranked in all four major editions, but did receive votes from Soccer Times.
"We gave up a very poor goal early on," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said, "and those things come back to haunt you. Even though we put ourselves in a hole, we played some really good soccer. We had chances, but unfortunately they didn't go our way. I say unfortunately, although when you tie ASU that's a pretty good result - yet we're disappointed that we didn't come away with more than a tie. I told the kids that's a great effort overall tonight, but we have to be better on Sunday vs. Arizona."
Looking ahead, the Ducks play No. 10 Arizona, Sun., at 1 pm at Pape' Field. The Wildcats fell in Corvallis Friday, 1-0, on a Beaver goal in the 81st minute even though the Wildcats outshot the Beavers, 11-8.
"Arizona is definitely a good team," Higa said. "They play a pass-oriented offense like us. We're looking forward to the game, and we always play well against them (Oregon is 5-1-1 all-time vs. Arizona)."
