PERSONAL ? Born Ryan David Phipps on Apr. 10, 1985 in Corona, Calif. Parents: Dave and Tracy Phipps. Family: Two sisters. High School (Coach): Centennial (Matt Logan) 2004. Major: Pre-Business Administration.
HIGH SCHOOL ? The PrepStar All-American was rated among the top 50 prep prospects in the state (SuperPrep) as well as one of the best 10 linebackers. Also included among the Tacoma News Tribune’s Western One-hundred elite. The two-time all-Mountain View League and all-Inland Empire choice helped the Huskies to the CIF Division V championship his junior year, adding 170 tackles, four fumbles and two interceptions.
OREGON ? Although he made his way onto the field enough as a special teams standout to warrant a letter, is still fighting through the inconsistencies not uncommon with his inexperience. Would turn coaches’ heads one minute during off-season workouts before regressing at times in routine situations. Possesses a strong sense of the game as well as the mental and physical tools needed to be successful yet continues to work on his grasp of the defense. Once he’s able to trust his instincts, is expected to have a tremendous future. Led all tacklers with nine stops in the ?05 Spring Game.
2004 ? Played in five games as a true freshman, acummulating three of his five tackles in his latter two appearances vs. UCLA and Oregon State. Credited with two stops in the season finale against the Beavers. Earned praise as team’s top special teams performer on the scout team during week leading up to season opener vs. Indiana before finishing the season strong on kickoff and kick return units.
