5 Things To Watch: Rutgers
10/18/25 | Football
The Ducks play at the Scarlet Knights on Saturday (3:30 p.m., BTN).
PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Ducks are looking to bounce back this week when they go back on the road in Big Ten play.
The No. 8 Oregon football team will look to rebound from its first loss of the season when the Ducks play Saturday at Rutgers. The game kicks off in SHI Stadium at 3:30 p.m. PT.
Oregon enters the game at 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten, coming off a loss in a top-10 matchup against Indiana at home last week. The Ducks are looking to improve to 3-0 on the road in conference play so far this season, and to extend a nine-game road win streak that leads the nation.
The Scarlet Knights are 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten. The teams have no common opponents so far, and this will be the first all-time meeting between the two.
Saturday's game will be broadcast by the Big Ten Network, with Guy Haberman providing play by play, Jake Butt adding analysis and Brooke Fletcher reporting from the sidelines.
Some storylines to watch when the game kicks off …
1. Under head coach Dan Lanning, losses have been rare but the refrain from the team after them has been consistent — the Ducks have to go to the doctor, and take their medicine.
Since the minutes following the loss to Indiana, that's been the message from Lanning's team. But the Ducks also know their goals all remain in front of them.
"I don't think you look at that game and say everything was broken, either," Lanning said. "We lost to a really good team. We're tied in the fourth quarter and we don't finish the game. Did we play our best game? No. We didn't play our best game in the first half, but what's success look like? It looks like improvement. It looks like us getting better and not making the same mistakes."
2. Last week's game was tied after the pick-six in the fourth quarter by Brandon Finney Jr. But it was the Hoosiers who scored the final 10 points of the day.
UO quarterback Dante Moore is no doubt eager for another chance to lead his team to a tough victory, as he did in Oregon's previous game at Penn State.
"I think he saw a lot of moments in that game where he could've played to a higher degree, and to what he's capable of," Lanning said. "He's proven that he's a good quarterback, and he didn't play to his best (last) Saturday; he knows that. We didn't put him in the most advantageous situations on Saturday as well. He came in (for the start of Rutgers game week) and attacked it really well."
3. Among Oregon's biggest challenges against the Scarlet Knights will be keeping running back Antwan Raymond out of the end zone.
Going back to last season, he has a touchdown in eight straight games. He had multiple rushing touchdowns in all four games Rutgers played in September, and ranks second nationally with nine rushing touchdowns this season.
"They don't have a lot of indicators in the run game, which allows them to take the ball in multiple directions," Lanning said. "They do a great job of getting north and south. When they make a decision, they hit the hole and they hit it with violence. Really good run game and it's built off of some of the stuff we saw last week with RPOs down the field. If you load the box, they have the ability to throw it to the guys outside and take advantage of it."
4. Oregon's has a very good run game as well, which wasn't necessarily apparent as the Ducks tried to come from behind throughout the second half against the Hoosiers.
"We ran the ball really effectively in the first half and just didn't come back to that enough in the second half," Lanning said. "The running game is a really important piece of what we do and it will continue to be a big piece of what we do."
Indeed, the Ducks ran for 61 yards in the first half last week, then just 20 in the second half. They'll look to play to their strengths more consistently this week.
5. The Ducks had the lead just once last week, and the teams traded scores all game long until Indiana scored the last 10 points. Rutgers could be another fist-fight.
"Coach (Greg) Schiano is a guy I have tremendous respect for," Lanning said. "His name speaks for itself, and what he's been able to do over the years. His team, when you watch them play, they play with a brand of toughness and they challenge you in a lot of ways."
For the Ducks, a key will be continuing to throw punches all game long. Rutgers might be 0-3 in the Big Ten, but the Scarlet Knights have had the lead or been tied at halftime in all three. Oregon can't be deterred if a tough battle develops in the early going Saturday.
