Oregon Drops 1-0 Contest to Purdue
09/29/24 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon and Purdue played an evenly-matched contest Sunday afternoon at Papé Field in front of a season-high 1,008 fans. But the Boilermakers scored on a corner kick to defeat the Ducks, 1-0.
The two teams were nearly identical in the final statistics. Purdue took 13 shots to Oregon's 11. The Boilermakers committed just two more fouls than the Ducks, 8-6.
The biggest differential came on corner kicks as Purdue attempted seven while Oregon had three, and it was a set piece that proved to be the difference Sunday.
"Disappointed, you know, to lose a game on a set piece we feel is a controllable, you know," said coach Graeme Abel. "We put ourselves in a hole in the first half and so we're digging ourselves out.
"But in the second half we were good, you know, better on the second ball, our numbers rotated up higher, so we were able to get more pressure to the ball," said Abel. "I thought we created enough things and enough services in the 18-yard box that we thought we should have got something out of it."
How It Happened: Oregon (5-7, 1-4) conceded a pair of corner kicks early in the match, the second of which resulted in a goal for Purdue (6-5-1, 2-3) in the 10th minute.
That was the difference in the game, though the Ducks pressed for the equalizer for the final 80 minutes. Oregon outshot Purdue, 7-5, in the first half.
Oregon's best scoring chance came in the 71st minute when Taylor Person found Ariane Haysman Boaler behind Purdue's back line and she looked to have a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper. But the Boilermakers' Emily Edwards charged out of her net to snuff it out.

Haley McWhirter and Livvy Moore took three shots each for the Ducks.
Maddy Goldberg made four saves in holding Purdue scoreless in the second half.
"I thought the back line did a much better job in the second half of being aggressive, stepping, and kind of plugging those holes up," said Abel.
Notable: This was the first game between Oregon and Purdue since 2008. … With eight saves on the weekend, Goldberg reached 150 career saves and moved into a tie for eighth on the UO career list with Cody Miles (2008-10).

Quotable:
Head coach Graeme Abel on putting together a complete game
"Yeah, 89 minutes and 50 seconds of it, you know? Collegiate soccer, set pieces. We want to watch our set pieces. We talk about it and we train a lot to feel it's controllable. So, you know, when we look back, we'll be disappointed in that piece, for sure."
Up Next: The Ducks play at USC Saturday at noon (B1G+).
