Ducks Come Up Short at No. 21 USC
10/05/24 | Women's Soccer
CARSON, Calif. – Oregon limited No. 21 USC's opportunities, but the Trojans took advantage of a red card assessed to Duck goalkeeper Maddy Goldberg for a 2-0 win Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park.
How It Happened: USC (9-1-2, 5-0-1) scored in the 18th minute. Maile Hayes struck the far post with her initial shot, but found the net on the rebound.
Goldberg made five of her six saves in the first half – three in the final four minutes – to hold the Trojans to a 1-0 lead at halftime.
After Goldberg sent off with a red card due to dangerous play in the 60th minute, the Trojans took advantage. Hayes scored her second goal of the match in the 63rd minute for a 2-0 lead.
Oregon (5-8, 1-5) made the most of its three shot attempts, putting all three on frame. Haley McWhirter had two shots on goal, while Grace Mensah had one.
Notable: Prior to her dismissal, Goldberg passed Cody Miles (150 saves, 2008-10) for eighth on the UO career saves list. Goldberg finished the game with 155 career saves. She will have to sit out the Ducks' next match due to the red card. … Sophomore Anna Solomon replaced Goldberg. In her first action in net since last season, Solomon made one save and allowed one goal. … McKenna Siel, a redshirt freshman from Portland, Ore., made her first appearance in an Oregon uniform, starting the second half and playing 13 minutes.
Up Next: Oregon hosts No. 5 Michigan State Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (Big Ten Network) before holding its annual senior day festivities Sunday against Michigan (1 p.m., B1G+).
