Rivalry Game A Dominant Day For Ducks

No. 9 Oregon beat Oregon State on the road Saturday, 49-14, to reach 3-0 on the season entering a bye week.
The UO football team improved to 3-0 on Saturday with a 49-14 victory over rival Oregon State at Reser Stadium. The No. 9 Ducks rolled up 546 yards of offense and shut out the Beavers in the second half, building momentum entering a bye week and then the start of Big Ten Conference play.
"Today we left the field knowing we played up to the standard," sophomore center Iapani Laloulu said. "And yet knowing there's still things we can fix. … It was a great feeling to leave the field knowing we played Oregon football."
Dillon Gabriel completed his first 15 passing attempts on the way to finishing 20-of-24 for 291 yards and two touchdowns, plus a 54-yard rushing touchdown. Jordan James rushed for two touchdowns and Noah Whittington also ran for a score, while Eugene native Bryce Boettcher led the UO defense with 10 tackles and Sheldon High graduate Teitum Tuioti added seven tackles with a sack.
After two weeks in which penalties and sacks on offense and explosion plays allowed by the defense spurred questions about this Oregon team, the Ducks quieted some doubts Saturday.
"We live in a world where if it doesn't look a certain way there's opinions, but there's also panic," Gabriel said. "I love how everyone in the building has continued to focus on the process and getting better every day. That allowed us to play with confidence and just let it loose."
Oregon never trailed Saturday, scoring first before OSU tied it 7-7 just before the end of the first quarter. Less than 90 seconds into the second, Gabriel kept the ball on an option run and scampered 54 yards for the first of three touchdowns he accounted for on the day.
That set the tone for a final three quarters in which Oregon outscored the Beavers 42-7. The Ducks ended a two-game losing streak in Corvallis, including a 2022 loss in which OSU rallied from behind in the fourth quarter.
"It's a way better feeling," Boettcher said. "It feels good to own the state for one more year."
The Ducks began the game with a new starting offensive line, a group that debuted for parts of the previous week's win over Boise State and featured Nishad Strother at guard, which moved Laloulu inside to center. Oregon had allowed seven sacks through two games, but didn't allow any Saturday and averaged 7.5 yards per rush.
James opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown in the first quarter. After OSU tied it late in the period, Gabriel put momentum in Oregon's corner for good with his 54-yard touchdown run. After compiling 19 positive rushing yards through the first two games of the season, Gabriel showed Saturday he can hurt a defense with his legs too.
"I always tell the O line," Gabriel said, "you give me the time, I'll do the crime."
Gabriel had plenty of time in the pocket Saturday, and didn't throw an incompletion until nearly 4 minutes had elapsed in the second half. The line gave Gabriel ample time for the play to develop on his first touchdown pass, a 20-yard reception by Traeshon Holden that made it 22-7 in the second quarter.
The Beavers scored again just before halftime, getting within 22-14 at the break. But it was all Oregon in the second half, with two field goals by Atticus Sappington, rushing touchdowns from James and Whittington and a 65-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Gabriel to Jayden Limar in the fourth quarter.
"As we continue to execute at a high level and play within the system, you're seeing confidence from everyone," Gabriel said. "But then it's also us molding together and finding our identity as well. You just see all the players making plays with the ball in their hands, and it makes my job easier."
As the offense was exploding in the second half, Oregon's defense was limiting anything explosive from OSU. The Beavers had just four explosive plays in the game, only one of those after halftime. And after going 4-of-5 on third down in the first quarter they were 3-of-10 the rest of the way — with just a single third-down conversion in the second half.
"I think it was just a mentality thing," Tuioti said. "Up front we just had to do our job. … Obviously that second half we came out with the right mentality."
Oregon State hurt Oregon in the first half by rushing for 116 yards, and countering those runs with screen passes. In the second half, the UO defense allowed just 15 rushing yards, while sacking the quarterback twice.
"Ultimately we wanted to walk away from the field saying we're the tougher team, the more physical team," UO coach Dan Lanning said. "I think that showed up in the second half."
Now the Ducks will enter a week of self-evaluation as they reach a bye on their schedule. Then, it's the start of Big Ten Conference play at UCLA, having provided a glimpse of their potential this season with Saturday's outcome.
"Really proud of our guys and their performance," Lanning said. "I think it shows what we're capable of doing, and owning our standard."
