Football Practice Recap: April 20

The Ducks held a scrimmage Saturday inside Autzen Stadium.
The Oregon football team held its second major scrimmage of this spring on Saturday in Autzen Stadium. The weather was much improved over the week before, and there were more big plays on both sides of the ball.
After the scrimmage, head coach Dan Lanning met with local media, as did new running backs coach Ra'Shaad Samples, defensive back Kam Alexander and running back Jay Harris. Video of those interviews is embedded below.

Some highlights from coach Lanning …
On his initial impressions before reviewing film: "Really great, positive scrimmage for us. A lot of things to improve but really physical out there, saw some better execution at times. The offense did a good job moving the ball at times, but they also turned the ball over; defense started off with a three-and-out, and had some really good back-and-forth. I think they won both red-area situations and 2-minute situations there at the end. So, some good back-and-forth throughout the scrimmage, some good physicality."
On areas of improvement he saw over last week: "It was much more physical, this scrimmage, which is what you want to see. It's always a fine line as a coach, trying to decide if you go out there and play two-hand-touch, but that's not football. So we had a physical scrimmage today and I think that showed up in the trenches, that showed up in our tackling and our blocking. So I think that was a real positive."

On the level of "juice" the team played with: "I'd say our passion today was really good; there was great juice. But I think that passion became a weakness: We had more penalties today than we've had in our previous scrimmages, and it's because of things that happened after the whistle. So we've got to be able to control that. We're not gonna be the team that beats ourselves. That's something we had to improve on from last season. So we had some up-downs to remind us of that right after practice."
