Ducks Draw with No. 18 Sun Devils, 1-1
10/04/14 | Women's Soccer
TEMPE, Ariz. – Oregon (5-3-2, 1-0-1 Pac-12) tied with No. 18 Arizona State (7-1-3, 0-0-2 Pac-12), 1-1, on the road Friday night in Tempe, Ariz. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Kelsey Foo scored on a penalty kick in the 71st minute, but ASU answered in the 87th minute and provided the equalizer.
How It Happened: The Ducks opened the game with an extremely strong first 20 minutes. Marlo Sweatman had a one-on-one opportunity with the Sun Devil keeper and Kristen Parr put a good header on a Lilly Archer corner in the first dozen minutes of the game.
Oregon dictated possession for the majority of the first half and kept Arizona State's two-headed monster of Cali Farquharson and Aly Moon at bay. The Ducks' back line limited the Sun Devils to just three shots and zero corners headed into the break.
The second half went back-and-forth with few legitimate chances for either side until a Sun Devil was called for a hand ball in the box. Foo, who was taking her first penalty kick of the year, stepped up in the 71st minute and crushed the PK into the lower left portion of the goal to give Oregon the lead, 1-0.
Oregon looked like they were going to hang on for the win until the 87th minute when Moon – the Sun Devils' second-leading scorer – converted a header off a well-fed ball from a Sun Devil wing to tie the score at 1-1. The two overtimes provided a couple fair chances for both sides, but Moon almost won the game for ASU in the waning minutes of second overtime in the 110th minute when her chip shot over Abby Steele just went wide of the goal.
Takeaways: The Ducks stepped up in their first conference road game of the year and tied a top-25 opponent. Oregon held the top scoring combo in the nation (Moon/ Farquharson, 4.11 points per game) in check for the majority of the game, and outshot a Sun Devil team that entered the week second in the Pac-12 in shots per game (17.5).
Besides the goal by Moon, the Oregon defense smothered the majority of ASU's chances. Steele's two saves is the most indicative statistic of the Ducks' ability to handle opponents even when they are deep in the offensive third of the field.
Another Game, A Different Scorer: Foo's first goal of the season adds to the increasingly noticeable story line of different scorers for Oregon. The Ducks now have 10 different players who have scored on the year.
Offense Improving: Even though they only came away with one goal, the Oregon offense showed flashes of scoring potential in a variety of ways – particularly in the first half. Parr was aggressive again in her second game back, Bri Pugh put consistent pressure on the Sun Devil defense and almost all of Archer's corners and free kicks were on-target.
Oregon's 17 shots is their third-highest total on the year and their most since Sep. 7 against Cal State Fullerton. The ASU back line rose up and played high for most of the game, and the Ducks saw the benefits of numerous well-played through balls.
Next Up: The Ducks will travel two hours south and play Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 5 at noon. Arizona shutout Oregon State earlier today, 2-0.
