EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon soccer team was 16 minutes away from sweeping a weekend of Pac-12 Conference games for the first time since 2010, until Colorado used two late goals to escape Pape Field with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon.
How It Happened: Kahlia Hogg scored both goals for the Buffs, knotting the score at 1-1 in the 75th minute and stuffing in a rebound in the 87th minute. “Pac-12 points are hard to come by,” UO coach Kat Mertz said. “You're always fighting for a point here and there, and to see it disappear like that was disappointing.”
The Ducks took an early lead with a Kristen Parr goal in the 7th minute, Oregon's earliest goal of this season. The game remained tied for nearly the next 70 minutes, until Colorado's late rally. “We played some pretty good soccer the first half,” said Parr, whose second goal of the year was assisted by Allie Rodriguez. “We've got to just figure out how to play 90 minutes.”
Colorado ramped up its attack after halftime, taking eight of its 12 shots in the second half. Oregon keeper Lauren Holden, playing in place of Abby Steele, needed to make just one save in the first half, but she had four in the second. She stopped a shot just prior to the game-winner but couldn't smother the ball, and Hogg stuffed it in. “(Holden) came out well in the first half,” Mertz said. “There were some good moments there, and some moments I thought she was on her heels al little bit. That's part of growing up as a goalkeeper.”
Oregon had a goal waved off by a penalty in the second half, and Shanelle Simien chipped a potential go-ahead goal just wide of the left post shortly after the Buffs tied it.
What It Means: The Ducks came up short of sweeping a weekend of Pac-12 games for the first time since beating the Arizona schools at home in 2010. Oregon fell to 6-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play, while Colorado improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-12.
Up Next: Oregon goes on the road to face Washington State next Sunday (1 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Networks) before returning home to host USC on Friday, Oct. 24.
