Duck Soccer Beats Weber State in OT, 3-2
09/03/04 | Women's Soccer
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Duck women's soccer team posted its first win of the season in a 3-2 overtime thriller over Weber State in the first game of the Utah Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Utah.
The win raised Oregon's record to 1-1-1, and lowered Weber State to 1-2 on the season.
Junior Duck forward Mele French scored first for the Ducks at 29:34 from 10 yards out on an assist by freshman Jen Cameron. The Wildcats responded with two goals in the final 30 minutes (73:53 by Naomi Felix and 77:02 by Veronica Walker) to go up a goal before senior defender Christine Mintz answered in the 85th minute on a free kick 35 yards out.
In the extra stanza, hometown native and junior Caitlin Gamble notched her second goal of the season on a five-yarder from the left corner on an assist by redshirt sophomore forward Andrea Valadez.
"We were very dominant early, and had good possession and good looks but nothing to show for it," Steffen said. "Later on, we went into a lull and they kept battling, and pushing. They eventually forced us into some mistakes and won some challenges and then went ahead. Christine scored on a free kick - it wasn't the prettiest kick, and the keeper almost caught it then lost it, and it went in. In overtime, we had a lot of chances, and finally won it when Andrea broke down the left side, challenged and won the ball. She got into box and served it into Caitlin who knocked it off her chest - in especially nice goal for her as a gamewinner at home in front of her family. It was also nice to see Christine score since there aren't a lot of opportunities for defenders to score. We were good at moments today, but we need to be better for longer stretches of time."
The Ducks held a 24-8 edge in shots and 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, while Weber State bettered the Ducks in saves (12-3) and fouls (12-10). French led the Ducks in shots (5), and was followed by Valadez and freshman forward Kami Kapaku (4-each) - among nine Ducks that mustered attempts on the afternoon. French and Kapaku also led the visitors in shots on goal (3).
French's goal was the seventh of her career and moved her into a tie for seventh all-time for the Ducks with Valadez.
In goal, Steffen gave sophomore Emily Marrer her first career start. She played all 98:48 minutes and allowed two goals and came up with three saves.
"Individually, Caitlin was very good today," Steffen said, "and Kami fried a couple people on runs in the penalty area but couldn't quite find the net. Once she gets her first goal, hopefully it will get her going. All the backs did a decent job, particularly Dylann (Tharp) who is getting more and more comfortable. Our defenders were challenged because Weber State didn't play a particular system, so it was tough for our midfielders to figure out who and where exactly to play, and consequently tougher for our backs to respond. We gave Emily a chance to start, and she did OK although one of their goals came when she cleared a ball into their player. She had a good game against Ohio State last week, so she deserved some time, and here was an opportunity. We have some situations where there isn't a lot of separation at various places on the field, so you have to give them a chance to prove themselves. It's easier for field players to rotate around 10-15 minutes and get a chance, but tougher for keepers, so here was a chance for Emily."
Looking ahead, the Ducks face host and No. 24-ranked Utah in the tourney finale on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 pm MT/Noon PT. More tourney info is available at the www.UtahUtes.com website.
"Utah is organized, very athletic, and used a 4-3-3 alignment today," Steffen said. "They play well as a team, and don't rely on one particular individual. They're deep and they get forward a lot, and it should be a good match."
