Soccer Battles NCAA Runner-up UConn in 1-0 Loss

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Oregon women's soccer team ended their East Coast swing Sunday with a tough 1-0 loss at returning NCAA runner-up University of Connecticut.
UConn's Jessica Gjertsen scored the game's lone goal at 23:57 on an assist by Dominique Diadoo. The shot was taken from 18 yards and driven hard and low by Gjertsen.
For the Ducks, redshirt sophomore forward Andrea Valadez led in shots (6), while freshman forward Kami Kapaku added two.
In goal for Oregon, redshirt junior goalkeeper Domenique Lainez came up with seven saves. The San Bruno, Calif., native was only two shy of her season high (9) from Friday's game at Central Connecticut State, while she also wrapped up eight saves last week at Utah. Her Husky counterpart, Megan Jessee, posted six saves Sunday en route to the shutout.
"I was pleased with the effort, and we battled hard for the win the whole way," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said, "we just didn't quite get the result. Andrea and Kami had several great chances, but were just unlucky. I thought we played with a much more calm and composed purpose than Friday. Emily Danner and Jen Cameron played well for us in the rear midfield, and Dom came up with several nice saves to keep us in contention."
Comparing team stats, UConn held slight edges in shots (14-11), corner kicks (5-4) and offsides (2-1), and Oregon owned an advantage in fouls (8-4).
The loss lowered Oregon's record to 1-4-1 on the season, and UConn improved to 3-5 overall.
Looking ahead, the Ducks look forward to another weekend on the road, although much closer to their home digs. Oregon plays at 2002 national champion Portland on Fri., Sept. 24 at 7 pm, and at Portland State, Sun.., Sept. 26 at 1 pm.
