Duck Soccer Falls at No. 5 Portland, 5-2
09/24/04 | Women's Soccer
PORTLAND, Ore. - After they drew even 2-2 halfway through the second half, the University of Oregon women's soccer team witnessed the No. 5-ranked University of Portland's offensive firepower first-hand Friday night, and eventually succumbed to a 5-2 loss at Merlo Field.
Portland's Lindsey Huie scored first at 12:10 from 10 yards out on an assist by Christine Sinclair. Less than seven minutes later, UO freshman forward Kami Kapaku answered with her first collegiate goal from 17 yards out on a left-footed boot. Portland went ahead just before halftime when Lisa Sari headed in a shot to the far post at 44:36 on a short cross from Sinclair.
In the second half, Oregon senior defender Christine Mintz scored her second goal of the season and career to tie the game 2-2 at 67:35. Soon after, Portland went back ahead when All-America forward Sinclair scored off a 1-on-1 against Duck goalkeeper Domenique Lainez at 70:23.
The Portland offense continued to gain momentum with two more goals in the final 10 minutes. Kelli Cronkrie found the net on a header from five yards center off assists by Sinclair and Huie. In the 87th minute, UP claimed its final goal when Michele Scifo scored from seven yards out to the far post on an assist by Elsa Hume.
In the team comparisons, Portland led in shots (27-7), corner kicks (5-0) and offsides (4-1), and Oregon held advantages in saves (12-3) and fouls (12-8).
Individually, junior forward Mele French led Oregon in shots (2), and single shot-takers included forward Kapaku, midfielders Sabrina DeMonte, Cristan Higa and Jen Cameron, and defender Mintz.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Domenique Lainez ended with a season-high 11 saves - only four shy of her all-time high and school record vs. Texas A&M last season (15).
For UP, Sinclair's five points on the evening (3 assists, 1 goal) tied the season high by a Duck foe, and tied the all-time record for most assists in a game by an opponent. Teammate Jennifer Tuttle's team-leading eight shots was one better than the previous opponent season high, and two shy of the all-time UO opponent record.
Friday's win raised Portland's record to 8-1 on the season, and 7-0 all-time against Oregon. The Ducks fell to 1-5-1 overall.
Looking ahead, the Duck women remain in the Rose City for a Sunday match at Portland State at 1 pm. More info on the host Vikings program is located at the www.goviks.com website.
