STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Oregon women's soccer opened its penultimate weekend of regular season action with a 2-0 loss to No. 14 Stanford Friday evening afternoon at Maloney Field.
The two teams remained in a 0-0 deadlock for the first 80 minutes, before the Cardinal scored twice late in a two-minute span to earn the victory. Midfielder Shari Summer scored first at 80:34 on a 13-yard shot from the right box to the left net. The score was created on a 25-yard cross from the left side by midfielder Natalie Sanderson, and started by a vertical lead pass from Marcie Ward. Two minutes later at 82:30, Ward added her eighth goal of ?04 on a fastbreak on the left side, and slowly skidded the ball just to the right of the Ducks' charging goalkeeper Domenique Lainez from 23 yards out, into the right side of the net. For the Ducks, freshman Kami Kapaku led in shots (3) and shots on goal (3), and junior midfielder Carlie Ashcraft also had two shots and two shots on goal. The Salt Lake City native Ashcraft notched a season best with her two shots on goal, and her two shots tied her a season best which she had notched twice before in ?04. In goal, Lainez came up with six saves in her 90:00 of duty, and wrapped up several at point blank range before Stanford's two late scores. "We played better in the second half," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "Stanford is one of the deeper teams in the Pac-10 and also very good technically top to bottom. Our work rate and effort level helped make up for some of their possession time advantages. We created some chances in the second half, but couldn't convert." The Ducks continued to tab its youthful roster and started two freshmen - Kapaku and defender Dylann Tharp. The frosh quartet of forwards Gennaka Fox and Aimee Goss, midfielder Emily Danner and defender Lisa Tedford also played off the bench. In the team comparisons, Stanford held advantages in shots (18-5), shots on goal (8-5), fouls (8-3), corner kicks (9-0) and offsides calls (2-1), and the Ducks held an edge in saves (6-5). For the Cardinal, Ward led in shots (5) and shots on goal (2), and was among nine home players to take shots. Goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart came up with five saves in goal. Stanford midfielder Shari Summer was the only player on either team to get whistled for a yellow card, with a tackle on UO's Ashcraft near the midfield at 24:52. Friday's outcome raised Stanford to 11-4-2 overall and in 3-2-1 Pac-10 play, and Oregon fell to 3-11-2 and 0-5-1 in the league. The final two-goal margin Friday was the second-closest in the Duck-Cardinal seven-year history with the closest Duck loss (1-0) in Eugene in 1999. In this week's polls, the Cardinal were tabbed 13th by Soccer Buzz online magazine, 14th by Soccer America, 17th in the NSCAA coaches poll and 18th in Soccer Times. Looking ahead, the Ducks play another top-20 opponent, California, Fri., Oct. 31 at Berkeley, at noon. -
