After not playing organized soccer for three seasons, returned to sport in mid-August 2002, and the two-sport star basically started from scratch against a league that featured seven ranked Pac-10 opponents, and four other non-conference NCAA tourney foes. Initially got idea to walk-on working as a grocery store checker when she made an offhand joke about joining team to assistant Jon Kiester as he walked through her checkout line, and he suggested she talk to the coach. In track & field last spring made fourth NCAA appearance in discus. Shaking off her obvious nervousness, she came up with one save and allowed two goals on difficult plays (one with little defensive help). In spring of 2003, ended outdoor track and field career ranked second all-time in discus (179-7) and fourth in the shot put (49-11 1/4), was a two-time discus All-American (eighth as a freshman and sophomore) and four-time NCAA veteran, a six-time Pac-10 scorer, including four, top-four discus finishes (and twice top-eight in shot put), and also the 2003 West Region champion (after entering meet seed fifth).
High School: Earned three letters in soccer, including MVP honors as goalkeeper for '97 state champions, and four letters in basketball as a wing/post ... Won state titles in the discus in 1998 (154-10) and 1999 (155-10) ... Added state shot put runner-up finish as a senior (44-7 1/4), and claimed victory as a junior in 1998 (44-4) ... Owned high school bests of 168-6 in discus and 48-2 1/2 in shot put to rank sixth and fourth, respectively, in the nation as senior ... National Honor Society member and Honor Roll selection.
Personal: General studies major ... Born Mary LeAnn Etter on August 25, 1980 in Redmond, Wash.
Coach Steffen on Etter: "Mary's shown phenomenal growth as a goalkeeper because of her athleticism. She should really continue to mature as she applies the things she picked up last year."
