Ducks Upset No. 8 Washington, 2-1
10/26/25 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – After a fall filled with near misses and late-game heartbreak, Oregon scored with two minutes remaining in the match to pull off the biggest upset in the Big Ten Conference this season, taking down No. 8 Washington, 2-1, in the 2025 finale Sunday at Papé Field. It was the Huskies' first loss in conference play this season.
Carly Cormack scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 35th minute. After the Huskies tied the match 1-1 in the 58th minute, Lauren Kenny scored the game-winner from point-blank range on a set piece with 2:00 left in the match.
"It feels great," said Kenny. "We've been waiting for this moment. It's been a long time coming, and every loss has been a building block. We've done all the work to get to this point."
It was the highest-ranked win for the Ducks since defeating No. 3 Stanford, 2-1, in the 2020 season. It was also the program's third all-time victory over a top-10 opponent.
"I'm so happy for all the seniors to close it out and I'm especially happy for our transfers, what a great feeling for them," said coach Tracy Joyner. "I'm happy to finally put everything together.
"We talked about building a foundation for the years to come," Joyner said. "We've been waiting to solidify that all season long and now to close out our season the way that we did and the fashion that we did it in sets a new precedent, a new standard, and a new expectation."
How It Happened: Oregon refused to back down in a physical match against Washington (11-2-5, 8-1-2), which wrapped up the 2025 Big Ten regular season title a week ago.
In the 18th minute, Cormack made a play at the defensive end of the field to deny the Huskies on a corner kick. UW's Kelsey Branson headed a shot toward the left post and out of the reach of goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein. But Cormack was on the goal line and headed the ball away to keep the game scoreless.

The Ducks (3-10-5, 1-6-4) found the back of the net on a set piece in the 35th minute. Cailin Bloom launched a free kick from midfield all the way into the penalty box. Carys Hall got on the end of that pass and headed a shot toward the net that Washington saved, but Cormack was there to pounce on the rebound and fired the ball home from five yards out.
"It's definitely a rivalry between the Ducks and the Dawgs, so it meant a lot," said Cormack. "It was a really intense game, and I thought we played really well and put up a good fight."
Goldstein made a save just before halftime on a line drive off another Washington free kick and the Ducks went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. For the match, Goldstein had four saves to earn her 36th and final career win in net.
"I'm so happy for her," said Joyner, who coached Goldstein at UC Davis before Oregon. "We couldn't have drawn it up better for her. It's surreal for her, I'm sure, and what a great way to close out an amazing career."

The game's intensity amped up in the second half, where there were 20 fouls, four yellow cards and a red card.
Washington broke through with a goal in the 58th minute that tied the game, 1-1.
Minutes later, Taylor Bryan, playing in her last match as a collegian, ran a defender off the ball just inside Washington's half of the field and sprinted straight toward the goal. Her shot from the right side was deflected away at the last second by a Husky defender, but the effort set the tone for the final build up.
The last card of the match set up Oregon's game-winning goal. The Huskies' Kolo Suliafu was assessed a red card for a dangerous tackle on Bryan's legs in the 88th minute after the Duck forward got behind the defense and was headed for a one-on-one showdown with Washington's keeper.
On the restart, Ella Osmussen took the free kick from 35 yards out on the left side and hit a line drive into the box that a Husky defender unintentionally headed off the far post. The ball then deflected toward the near post, where Kenny met it and used her midsection to nudge the ball over the line for the first game-winning goal of her career.
"I think experience is everything," said Joyner. "We've obviously given up a couple of games this season because of our inability to have composure in key areas of the field. That was something we talked about at halftime, maintaining our composure, because we lose our focus or lose our heads at dangerous points.
"The previous trauma that we've endured in other games allowed us to have that experience and that perspective in the last 20-30 minutes of this game."

Notable: Cormack finished the season with the team lead in goals (four) and points (10) … Goldstein played in her 80th career match, while Bryan played in her 81st … Hall's assist was her second of the season and third of her career … Oregon's 18 fouls were a season high, while the 21 fouls by Washington were the most by a Duck opponent … The three yellow cards were one shy of the program record of four set at Gonzaga in 1996.

Quotable:
Head Coach Tracy Joyner looking to the future of the program
"I think that everyone knows that this program is just going to be something that's on the rise, and I know that it's a desirable place for recruits and players to be. So yeah, I mean, certainly a win over a top-10 team doesn't hurt. I think we're just going to continue to focus on the things that are going to make us great, and it really starts with a really competitive culture that's founded on respect and a deep love and understanding for each other and for the game. I think we've certainly started to take massive steps toward that."
Head Coach Tracy Joyner on the season-high 607 fans who watched Oregon upset the Huskies
"I think the fans have been awesome. I know it's hard to come out and support teams when maybe they're not getting the results that you'd want your team to get, but I think that's been pretty unwavering, and just a lot of passion and a lot of positivity, and I love it. I think the feedback that I've heard and gotten is that this is just a fun team to watch."
Sophomore midfielder Carly Cormack on finishing the season strong
"We're going to look at building chemistry and continue to build off what we learned in the season in terms of keeping the ball and getting a rhythm of playing. I'm excited to get back at it. We never stopped believing in each other. Our huge thing is remembering why we started playing soccer because we love it. It doesn't have to be this stressful thing, and we can just play it because we love the game and we love each other."
