Ducks Sweep LIU in Home Opener

Sophomore opposite Alanah Clemente led all players with 11 kills.
EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 25 Oregon volleyball team improved to 4-0 with Friday's home sweep of Long Island (25-18, 25-16, 25-19) at Matthew Knight Arena. Led by a match-high 11 kills from Alanah Clemente, the Ducks had five players with at least six kills in the straight-set victory.
Fifth-year setter Marina Crownover directed her offense to a .277 hitting percentage and finished the match with 27 assists, eight digs, three service aces and two kills. Middle blockers Dalia Virlan and Iva Sucurovic combined for 13 kills against LIU while Laura Eichert and Valentina Vaulet each had six kills.
Defensively, the Ducks held LIU to a .128 efficiency figure in the first meeting between the two teams since 2015.
How It Happened: LIU (0-3) led 8-6 early in the first but Oregon won seven of the next eight points to take control of the scoreboard. The Ducks maintained a lead of at least three points and closed things out with four-point run including two kills from Clemente. The UO sophomore had six of her 11 kills in the opening frame and collectively, Oregon hit .462 (16-4-26) on its way to the 1-0 match lead.
The Ducks used another run of points in the second set to pull away from LIU. The visitors led 9-7 but Oregon rattled off the next eight points to go ahead, 14-9. Crownover had two of her aces during that stretch. Back-to-back kills from Eichert lifted the Ducks to a 22-14 lead while Sucurovic and Vaulet put away the final two points of the set with kills.
The third set was an offensive struggle for both teams and featured 11 ties and lead changes. Oregon turned a 16-16 tie into a 21-16 advantage with freshman Lizzy Robinson at the service line. The Ducks went on to take four of the last five points to secure the home sweep, winning the match on a service error by LIU.
Junior newcomer Sjakkie Donkers had all three of her kills in the third set.
