Oregon had five players with 10 or more kills in Saturday’s win.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 10 Oregon volleyball team toughed out four-set road win over Ohio State (24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 26-24) Saturday evening in Columbus, Ohio. All five primary attackers had at least 10 kills and the Ducks finished the match with 13.0 total team blocks including the final tandem stuff by Alanah Clemente and Alaina Pollard.
Â
With the win, Oregon improves to 17-3 overall with an 8-2 mark in Big Ten play.
Â
The Ducks begin a four-match home stand this Friday, Oct. 30, when the team hosts Maryland (6 p.m., B1G+). Tickets for UO home matches at Matthew Knight Arena are currently on sale.
Â
Fifth-year setter Marina Crownover dished out 47 assists to go along with 11 digs to register her team-leading 10th double-double of the season. In another Oregon double-double, Clemente tallied a career-high 17 digs coupled with 11 kills and a season-high seven blocks. Sjakkie Donkers finished with 13 kills and 14 digs in the team's third double-double effort.
Â
Pollard and Dalia Virlan combined for 22 kills and 13 blocks out of the middle. Pollard put down 12 kills (.455 hitting percentage) and tied Clemente for the match lead with seven blocks. Virlan added 10 kills (.348) and six blocks, and served out the final three points of the match.
Â
Sophomore libero Reese Sheppard finished the match with 14 digs, four assists and a service ace. The Ducks picked up 78 digs as a team, their highest total during Big Ten play this season.
Â
How It Happened: The teams exchanged 4-0 runs in the middle of the fourth set, resulting in an 18-18 tie after a block by Crownover and Pollard. The score was tied again at 22-all when Ohio State won two in a row to arrive at set points. Clemente saved the first with a deep shot to the back line and then UO tied it up when a slide tip attack landed just wide.
Â
After another attack error by the hosts, Clemente and Pollard ended the next rally with a block to seal the four-set victory. The fourth set between Oregon and Ohio State featured 13 ties.
Â
Virlan had four of her 10 kills in the final frame.
Â
Ohio State (10-10, 3-7) led throughout a majority of the opening set, building a lead as large as 19-10. The Buckeyes' advantage was 22-15 when head coach Trent Kersten called his second timeout. Out of the huddle, Oregon put together a 9-1 run to surge past Ohio State for the 24-23 lead. Pollard helped lead the rally with three kills during that stretch.
Â
However, the home team steadied to rattle off the next three points to take the early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Buckeyes were within four points of winning the second set, leading 21-18 after a block. Oregon responded immediately with a three-point push that featured a pair of Clemente kills. Ohio State had another block to go ahead 22-21 but another three-point run got the Ducks to set point. On the Ducks' second set point, Clemente and Pollard—like they would in the fourth—teamed up for a block.
Â
The third was also decided by a late-set move by the Ducks. With the score tied at 17-17, Oregon got consecutive kills from Valentina Vaulet followed by an OSU attack error to regain the lead for good. The Ducks took advantage of another pair of Ohio State miscues on the last two points for their first lead of the match, 2-1.
Â
Vaulet had 10 kills, eight digs and an ace in the win.
Â
Notable: Improves to 3-0 against Ohio State as Big Ten opponents … sixth win of the season (6-2) after losing the first set … did not allow an ace for just the second time this season … eighth match this year with double-digit team blocks … freshman Lizzy Robinson had her first career ace; put Oregon up 22-18 in the third set.
