Ducks Beat WSU, Improve to 5-0

Oregon picked up 90 digs for the first time since the 2021 season.
EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 25 Oregon volleyball team rallied from a set down and a 20-13 deficit in the third set on its way to a four-set win (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 31-29) Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena. With the victory, the Ducks improve to 5-0 through the first two weeks of the season.
Oregon picked up a season-high 90 digs in the match, the program's highest total since the 2021 team had 93 digs at Colorado. Fifth-year setter Marina Crownover led all players with a career-high 26 digs, and was one of four Ducks to register a double-double against Washington State. She also recorded 45 assists, six kills and a block.
Freshman Laura Eichert notched her second double-double of the week with 14 kills and 17 digs while Alanah Clemente (12K, 10D) and Valentina Vaulet (15K, 16D) had their first double-doubles of the year.
Sophomore libero Reese Sheppard tallied 13 digs, three assists and an ace.
How It Happened: Oregon led 18-15 in the first set but Washington State (4-1) came out of a timeout with a five-point surge and arrive at set point—24-21—after a kill by Eliana Tia. The Ducks saved a pair of set points with consecutive kills by Clemente but the visitors took the 1-0 match lead after an attack by Vaulet landed out.
Tia led the Cougars with 18 kills.
In another back-and-forth set, Washington State took a late 22-19 lead that forced an Oregon timeout. The Ducks answered by winning six of the next seven points including the last four of the frame. Eichert and Dalia Virlan teamed up for a block to even the match. Each also had a kill during the 4-0 set-ending run.
Virlan was the fourth Oregon player with double-digit kills, putting down 11 kills coupled with a .500 hitting percentage.
Facing a deficit as large as seven late in the third set, the Ducks ended the game on a 12-2 run to take the 2-1 lead. Washington State held leads of 20-13 and 21-15 before the UO rally. Oregon pulled even for 21-21 on a Vaulet kill and then took the lead with the help of back-to-back WSU attack errors. The Cougars saved one set point but Vaulet ended the next rally with another kill.
The final set featured 15 ties, most of those over the final half of the nail-biting finish. The Ducks went ahead 9-3 in the fourth but Washington State responded with a surge of its own to tie the score at 16-all. Oregon re-established a lead at 19-16 but the Cougars came right back with a four-point push and led 20-19.
From that point, the fourth set saw 10 ties and five match points for the Ducks.
Vaulet found the floor for a 30-29 lead and on the next rally, Oregon finally secured the win after a Washington State attack was sent long and out of bounds.
Notable: Washington State out-blocked Oregon, 12.5-6 … first meeting between the programs since Oregon joined the Big Ten … Oregon had four aces with one each from Eichert, Sheppard, Vaulet and Virlan; WSU had one ace.
Up Next: Oregon is back on the road next weekend for the Snyder-Park Classic (Sept. 11-13) in Tempe, Ariz. The field also includes San Diego, UC Davis and No. 7 Arizona State. The next home match is Sept. 17 against Portland State and Sept. 20 against Oregon State in the non-conference finale.
