Ducks Defeated in Battle with Penn State
04/09/26 | Women's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Oregon women's lacrosse team put up one of their most competitive conference performances to date, but could not summon enough momentum to topple No. 18 ranked Penn State in a 19-9 loss on the road.
Â
The Ducks (6-8, 0-6 Big Ten) scored nine goals for the second game in a row, but were outmatched by the offensive efforts of the Nittany Lions (11-3, 3-2 Big Ten). The UO squad stayed within two of their ranked foes after the first quarter, but as the game went on the Nittany Lions extended their lead to a 10-goal differential.
Â
Lexi Jenkins was a standout on the Oregon lineup, recording her first career hat trick. Anna Simmons and Emma Ing tallied a pair of goals as well. Hailey Russell had a defensive breakthrough, forcing three caused turnovers and picked up two ground balls.
Â
"I'm proud of the way we showed up tonight," head coach Jessica Drummond said. "We are so close to breaking through and getting that win. I like the way we're trending, but we have to continue to play a complete 60 minutes, not just a good quarter."
Â
How It Happened: Lexi Jenkins put the Ducks on the board not even a full minute into the first quarter. It was Oregon's only lead of the night, as Penn State scored three in quick succession. Emma Ing added her first goal of the night and Jenkins recorded her second to end the period trailing by two.
Â
The Nittany Lions scored six straight before Lilly Fortin was able to disrupt the run on an assist from Lyla Hurley. Francesca Viteritti replaced starting goalkeeper Kate Shields, and was able to record three saves to put a limit on the onslaught of scoring from the home team. Viteritti finished the evening with six saves and a .375 save percentage in 40 minutes of play.
Â
Anna Simmons added back-to-back scores from the end of the first half to the start of the second, bringing Oregon to a 11-6 trail. Simmons' second score was one of two for Oregon in the third quarter as Avery Young found the back of the net for her 13th score of the season.
Â
Penn State scored three more to force a running clock with a 17-7 lead. Ing put a temporary halt to that as she scored her second goal of the night on Fortin's 14th assist of the season.
Â
Jenkins capped her night with a hat trick as she scored goal No. 10 for the season in the fourth quarter, helping the Oregon offense match their best conference offensive performance of the season but falling short of a win.
Â
Up Next: The Ducks head straight to Rutgers where they will conclude their road trip on Sunday before returning to Eugene for the final game of the regular season with USC.
