EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon lacrosse head coach Jess Drummond announced Thursday the addition of Sophie McLaughlin as an assistant coach for the Ducks.Â
McLaughlin, a native of Keene, New Hampshire, joins Oregon after spending the past five years with 802 Lacrosse Club, including three seasons as head coach from 2023-25. She also served as a goalkeeper instructor and recruiting liaison for women's lacrosse camps at her alma mater, the University of Vermont, from 2019-24.Â
"I am thrilled to welcome Sophie to our staff," Drummond said. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and elite-level experience to our program. She will lead our draw and goalie units."Â
Throughout her coaching career, McLaughlin has helped develop numerous youth and high school athletes into Division I student-athletes.Â
A familiar face to the Oregon coaching staff, McLaughlin played for Drummond at Vermont from 2019-23 and was a teammate of current Oregon assistant coach Carolyn Carrera. During her collegiate career, she helped guide the Catamounts to the first America East Championship in program history in 2022.Â
"Her accomplishments as a player speak for themselves and demonstrate the expertise she will bring to developing our goalies and elevating their performance," Drummond said.Â
One of the most decorated players in Vermont history, McLaughlin started 54 games in goal and finished her career as the winningest goalkeeper in program history. She earned a bachelor's degree in health sciences and a master's degree in public health while excelling both on the field and in the classroom.Â
Her career accolades include America East Goalkeeper of the Year (2021), America East First Team All-Conference (2021), America East Second Team All-Conference (2023), America East All-Championship Team (2022), America East Elite 18 Team (2022), eight America East Defensive Player of the Week selections, five America East Commissioner's Honor Roll recognitions, three America East All-Academic Team honors, two Team MVP awards and two IWLCA Academic Honor Roll selections.Â
"Beyond her technical knowledge, Sophie has a passion for building relationships and investing in the growth of student-athletes both on and off the field," Drummond continued. "She will be an incredible addition to our program, and I'm excited to see the impact she will make on our athletes, our team culture and the continued development of our program."Â
"I am incredibly excited to join the Oregon women's lacrosse family," McLaughlin said. "Having the opportunity to work for Coach Drummond after playing for her makes this a truly special opportunity, and I am grateful for the trust she has placed in me. During my visit to Eugene, I was impressed by the people, culture and commitment to student-athlete development throughout the program and athletic department. I look forward to building meaningful relationships with our student-athletes and contributing to the continued success of Oregon lacrosse."Â
Mclaughlin joins Carrera on Drummond's staff as Oregon prepares for the 2027 season. Drummond will oversee the offense, Carrera will serve as defensive coordinator and McLaughlin will direct the Ducks' goalkeepers and draw units.Â
