Ducks Will Look For Bounceback Sunday

Oregon soccer allowed a goal for just the second time this season in a loss Thursday to New Mexico, and next hosts Grand Canyon on Sunday.
EUGENE, Ore. — An evenly played match that saw both teams surge at various times ended in a 1-0 loss for the Oregon soccer team to New Mexico on Thursday at Papé Field.
The Ducks (2-2-1) allowed a goal for just the second time this season, and it proved to be the difference. The UO women had a 13-12 advantage in shots but were unable to find the back of the net, while the Lobos did so in the 68th minute.
"All I really care about right now is the mentality," first-year UO coach Tracy Joyner said. "You're going to get results for sure when you play hard and you play with the right mentality. And this was just a really even game; it went back and forth, both teams had good chances and that's just — soccer is a cruel sport in some ways, you know."
How It Happened: The Ducks had a 7-6 advantage in shots in the first half, thanks in part to creating five corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
Oregon had a glorious chance in the 38th minute when Cloe Chase won a battle in the air in front of the New Mexico goal and put a header toward the right post. But a Lobos defender was able to position herself at the goal line and keep the ball out of the net.
"I thought we did enough to get a goal," Joyner said. "Some really dynamic set pieces; obviously, (Chase) got on the end of a couple. So that was disappointing in some ways. But they're hard to create, and it's hard to finish. So, I know the result isn't what we would ever want, but I thought we played well."

The Ducks got off the first two shots on goal in the second half, but in the 53rd minute the Lobos began a surge that saw them credited with the match's next six shots. The last, by Alejandra Puerto at the 67:53 mark, was the only shot of the night to beat UO keeper Caeley Goldstein.
"They throw a lot of numbers forward, so we knew that we were going to be under pressure a lot, and it was going to be hard to maintain possession and get your rhythm," Joyner said of the Lobos, winners of three of the last five Mountain West titles. "They're really good at sitting in pockets of space, you know. They're a seasoned, veteran team that knows how to win championships."
The Ducks responded to the goal and got off the final four shots of the night. They were unable to create the equalizer despite that late push.
"I think that's something we can be proud of, and we can kind of hang our hat on," Joyner said. "We fought till the end, and we created some of our best chances in the last 10 minutes."
Notable: Oregon's two goals allowed through five games is the fewest allowed by the Ducks since 2016. That team also surrendered just two goal in its first five matches. … Abella Hunter matched her career high with four shots, while Chase set a career best with three attempts.. … Thursday's tightly contested match followed a 3-1 victory by New Mexico over the Ducks in 2024.
Up Next: The Ducks host Grand Canyon on Sunday (11 a.m., B1G+).
