Passing Attack Shines In Win For Ducks

Dante Moore set a UO record for completion percentage as Oregon beat Minnesota on Friday, 42-13.
Moore recharged momentum for consideration of him as a Heisman Trophy candidate by leading Oregon to a 42-13 win over Minnesota. The Ducks' ground game powered them to wins over Wisconsin and Iowa in the team's two previous outings, but it was Moore who earned the spotlight Friday by going 27-of-30 — a UO record for completion percentage at 90.0 — for 306 yards with two touchdowns.
The No. 8 Ducks improved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten playing, with regular-season matchups at home against USC and on the road at Washington still to come in November. Their quarterback was a big reason why.
"I'm just excited for him," said receiver Jeremiah McClellan, whose athleticism was key to one of Moore's touchdown passes. "I was really proud of him, just all the work he's done put in and all the sacrifices he's had to go through. I'm just proud of him and everything he's been able to accomplish."
And yes, McClellan acknowledged, "It was amazing to finally get a dry game."
With the UO receiving corps thin due to injuries, Oregon's tight ends helped Moore to his record-setting efficiency through the air. Kenyon Sadiq, Jamari Johnson and Roger Saleapaga combined for 14 receptions for 178 yards and a touchdown, a typically acrobatic scoring play by Sadiq in his return from injury.
"I've just gotta give a shout out to the 10 other players with you on the field," Moore said. "With them making the spectacular catches, the front five giving me time in the pocket, the running backs opening the run game. Overall I couldn't do it without them. It feels great to have that (completion percentage record), a true blessing for sure, but without my teammates I wouldn't have gotten it done."
Oregon's rushing game still produced in typically explosive fashion. The UO backs combined for four rushing touchdowns, including plays of 39 yards by Jordon Davison and 40 by Noah Whittington.
Davison scored twice, giving him a dozen rushing touchdowns as a true freshman.
The UO defense held Minnesota to 200 yards of offense, including 62 on the ground. The Golden Gophers averaged 2.6 yards per rush, compared to 6.0 by the Ducks, just the latest example of Oregon dominating in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
"We're a physical football team," UO coach Dan Lanning said. "I don't think that's a secret."
The Ducks scored touchdowns on six of their first seven possessions, not counting a one-play drive to end the first half. The exception among those seven was a lost fumble to open the second quarter, but the other six full drives ended in the end zone, as Oregon kept its foot on the gas until the fourth quarter.
Both of Davison's touchdowns came in the first quarter. Whittington and Sadiq scored in the second, a quarter in which Minnesota got on the board with a pair of field goals. After the Golden Gophers opened the second half with a touchdown, Oregon drove to two more of its own, an acrobatic grab by McClellan and a rush by Jay Harris.
"Unbelievable job by our offensive staff," Lanning said of Oregon's offensive variety under coordinator Will Stein. "Great job by Will, great job by our players. A lot of those plays are plays that we've been able to execute throughout the season, and the ability to switch and change personnel has made it really tough for a defense, when you can be in empty and open or you can be in three-back sets. That variety, I think, makes it challenging to prepare for."
The Ducks now have an extra day to prepare for next week's Senior Day at Autzen, against USC; game time and television information will be finalized this weekend. Then Oregon will close out the regular season at UW.
With a little help, the Ducks could find themselves back in the Big Ten Championship Game. A College Football Playoff berth appears to require no help at all — other than that which the Ducks can give themselves by continuing to win.
