Ducks Bounce Back in a Big Way
04/20/24 | Baseball
The trio of Ducks combined to go 10-for-14 with three home runs, a triple and a double with 12 RBI and eight runs scored in helping Oregon even the three-game series at a game apiece.
Meggers matched a career high with four hits while driving in a career-best six runs and scoring a career-high four times. After Oregon's four-run lead dwindled to one, Meggers launched a three-run home run over the wall in right-center field to give the Ducks some breathing room.
Neville had a career-high three hits, including a two-run triple in the third that gave Oregon the four run lead, and a two-run homer in Oregon's seven run eighth inning that pushed the lead to six.
Walsh continued his tear at the plate collecting three hits including a first-inning double that led to a run and an eighth-inning two-run home run that traveled 462 feet. The Ducks' first baseman is 10-for-13 with four home runs, three doubles, seven RBI and eight runs scored in Oregon's three games this week.
How It Happened: Oregon put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Walsh doubled, after Meggers delivered a one-out single, to put two runners in scoring position. Jeffery Heard picked up the first RBI with an infield single before Maddox Molony put a squeeze bunt down to plate Walsh and make it 2-0.
After Stanford cut the lead to one with a solo homer in the second, Oregon pushed the lead to four with a three-run inning in the third.
Meggers again led off the rally with a base hit and moved to second on a Walsh single. Both runner moved into scoring position on a Heard swinging bunt that essentially served as a sacrifice, before Molony got his second RBI of the game and sixth of the series with a base hit. Neville capped the rally with a two-run triple into the right-center gap for a 5-1 lead.
Just like game one of the series, Stanford climbed back into the game with a big inning. This time the Cardinal cut the lead to one with a three-run fifth inning.
Stanford looked to tie it in the sixth and continue to take the momentum from Oregon, but left fielder Justin Cassella put an end to those thoughts throwing out Charlie Saum at the plate to end the threat.
The play at the plate sparked Oregon's offense in the seventh. After Carter Garate (HBP) and Cassella reached (BB) with one out forcing a trip to the mound by Stanford's coach. After the mound meeting, Meggers took the first pitch he saw and deposited it over the right-center field wall for a four-run lead.
Oregon broke it open in the eighth putting seven runs on the board highlighted by Neville and Walsh homers. Molony led off the frame with a walk before scoring on Neville's two-run blast. Drew Smith doubled into right center to keep the rally going before Bryce Boettcher and Garate had back-to-back singles, with Garate's scoring a run.
After an out, Meggers added his fifth RBI of the game, a run-scoring single that plated Garate. Walsh then crushed a 0-1 pitch over the trees in right field to make it 15-4.
Stanford scored a run in the bottom of the inning, before Oregon tagged on two more in the top of the ninth. Ryan Cooney walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on a Garate hit before scoring on an error by the Stanford third baseman. Meggers picked up his sixth RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored Garate.
