02/04/23 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon Acrobatics and Tumbling kicked off the 2023 campaign with a win, securing a 268.685-251.710 victory over Augustana Saturday afternoon.
The start-to-finish victory on Saturday marks the 12th season-opening victory in 13 years of competition.
How It Happened:
The Ducks got off to a strong start in the compulsory event, finishing with a score of 38.200. The event was aided by tone-setting performances in the pyramid and toss heats, with scores of 9.800 and 9.900, respectively, for an early 38.200-35.750 lead.
The Ducks stayed in front 63.800-58.800 despite some setbacks in the acro event. After opening heat one with a 7.00, Oregon recovered nicely with scores of 9.500 and 9.100 in the second and third heats.
The momentum continued to favor the Ducks, both in the meet and in the pyramid event under Taylor Susnara. After scoring 29.500 or better twice last season, Oregon continued the trend in the first meet, anchored by a 9.900 in the open heat, matching a season-best from last season. The Ducks entered the break leading 93.300-85.800
In a tightly contested toss event, Oregon edged Augustana 28.00-27.50 and expanded the overall lead to 121.300-113.300.
Seniors Jade Albalos, Bailee Lamson and Alexis Weller, along with junior Kaylie Barrera and sophomore Brylie Hoover, helped the Ducks to a 9.800 in the open heat, a mark that would have been a season-high a year ago.
Oregon maintained the trend of growing the margin in the tumbling event, outscoring the Vikings 56.125-50.795 and expanding the lead to 177.425-164.095. Competing in her home state, sophomore Haley Ellis scored 9.825 in the open pass to cap off the fifth event.
In the team event, the Ducks locked up victory with a final score of 91.26-89.01, concluding the day win a 268.685-251.655 win.
