
Oregon Stays Strong to Hold Off Azusa Pacific

Azusa, Calif. – The No. 5 Ducks finished off an early-season road stretch with an upset win over No. 3 Azusa Pacific for the second year in a row.
In the first of two matchups between the squads this season, the No. 5 Ducks defeated the Cougars 272.510-269.275. Last season, Oregon defeated then-No. 2 Azusa Pacific in Matthew Knight Arena.
"Tonight was electric," said head coach Taylor Susnara following the win. "I am so proud of this team and being able to push past some adversity we faced earlier in the week. We were as one tonight, and it showed."
How it Happened:
The Ducks once again got off to a good start by grabbing the lead following the compulsory event. Oregon improved upon the acro and pyramid heats in the event, with scores of 9.60 and 9.85 respectively, to gain an early 38.100-37.550 advantage over the Cougars.
After the Acro event, Azusa Pacific tightened up the contest, taking the event 28.35-27.85. The highlight of the event for Oregon was a 9.70 in the five element heat to maintaining a 65.950-65.900 lead.
Before the break, the Ducks were able to bring the total score to 95.250-94.800 with a strong effort in the Pyramid event. Oregon posted a 9.95 in the inverted pyramid heat, matching last season's top score and took the event 29.30-28.90.
The Cougars continued to chip away at the Duck lead following a 28.450-28.300 score in the toss event, favoring Azusa Pacific. Oregon was helped by a score of 9.650 in the 450 Salto heat.
The Ducks managed to grow their advantage coming out of the tumbling event. Karly Nowak, a NCATA Athlete of the Week honorable mention from week one, continued her strong senior campaign with a score of 9.900 in the aerial heat. At the end of the fifth event, Oregon created a 179.600-179.025 advantage leading into the final stretch of the night.
By a score of 92.910-90.200, Oregon used a season-best in the team event to clinch the second road victory of the season.
