Ducks Keep Undefeated Streak Alive
03/17/17 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon Acrobatics and Tumbling team defeated the Fairmont State Falcons Friday night 288.425 – 272.270 in front of a home crowd of 1,031 at Matthew Knight Arena. Oregon's final score of 288.425 is a season high and fifth highest in program history.
Oregon is now 4-0, the only undefeated team left in the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association (NCATA). Fairmont State moves to 1-4 on the season.
En route to keeping their record unblemished, the Ducks won 16 heats, and claimed five events – Compulsory, Pyramid, Toss, Tumbling, Team - while tying one (Acro). The Falcons only outscored the Ducks in three heats.
How it Happened: To open the night, Oregon swept all four heats of the Compulsory event, tallying its highest score of the night of 9.95 in the Toss heat.
In the Acro event, the Ducks earned marks of 9.40, 9.45, and 9.65 in the 5, 6, and 7-Element heats, respectively. Fairmont State's high score of 9.75 in the 6-Element heat helped the Falcons tie the Ducks in the event score at 28.50.
With a 9.75 in the Inverted and Synchronized Pyramid heats, Oregon would take the event with a 29.15 to Fairmont State's 28.95.
Heading into the half, Oregon led Fairmont State, 96.35 – 95.05.
The Ducks and Falcons traded high marks in the 450 Salto (9.85, UO) and Synchronized (9.75, FSU) Toss heats, but a 9.90 in the Open heat contributed by senior Alexis Cross, Blaire Wilson, Jalen Kirkland, Sabrina Peyton, Rachael Block, and junior Taylor Galvin solidified the Ducks' event win 29.45 – 28.65. The team's Toss event score is a season-high, and third highest in program history.
Oregon, having not lost a Tumbling event this season, swept the event with a final tally of 58.025 – 51.700. Both Taylor Galvin and senior Krista Phillips, NCATA Players of the Week this season, tallied 9.8s in the 6-Element and Open pass heats, respectively.
In the final Team event, the Ducks notched their highest event score of the season with a 104.60.
What it Means: The Ducks are the only undefeated team in the NCATA this season. The last time the Ducks had this long of a winning streak, the team went 6-1, only falling in the last regular-season meet to Azusa Pacific in the 2014 season (282.480 – 283.400).
Oregon's final score of 288.425 is a season high and fifth highest in program history.
The team's Toss event score of 29.45 is a season-high, and the third highest in program history.
A 104.60 is the Ducks' highest Team event score of the season.
Quotes: Head coach Chelsea Shaw –
Thoughts on tonight's win...
"We approach every meet like we haven't won before, so the girls come into it with the mindset of being ready to execute, and to be united. There were some things in this meet that definitely did not go as well as we have practiced, so we still have a lot of work to do."
On being the only undefeated team...
"We really don't keep track of the wins and losses. We execute the way we know how to, and we feel good about it."
On the feelings about the team routine...
"The team routine is hard to hit, because there is so much going on, and the girls are tired. The team loves performing though, and it is something we spend a lot of time training. I'm really proud of the team for hitting four meets in a row with no major flaws, and no major deductions."
Krista Phillips, Senior Base
On winning NCATA player of the week a few weeks ago...
"It was a great accomplishment to have that win (over Baylor), and then to have that acknowledgment for myself, and the team in general."
On being the only undefeated team left...
"It is definitely a great feeling. We like to take our mindset and change it into a way that we still have work to do, and know we still have to improve. Going into every meet and every practice with the underdogs mindset gives us a lot of fuel to execute everything to the best of our ability.
