No. 2 Oregon Takes Down No. 1 Baylor in Historic Win
02/25/17 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 2 University of Oregon Acrobatics and Tumbling team defeated No.1-ranked Baylor in statement fashion, 285.025 – 277.900, Saturday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks' 55th all-time win, in front of an electric home crowd of 1,273, is the first for the Ducks against the Bears since the 2014-15 season.
En route to claiming five events – Compulsory, Pyramid, Toss, Tumbling, and Team Routine – Oregon won 10 heats. Baylor took the Acro event and had eight heat wins.
With today's historic victory, the Ducks are 3-0 to begin the 2017 campaign. Last season, Oregon was 2-0 before Baylor handed the team their first loss in Waco, Texas (274.450 – 278.935). Oregon's last 3-0 start was in the 2014-15 season.
How it Happened: The Ducks started out hot right from the gate in the Compulsory event, outscoring the Bears in all four heats and taking the event, 38.60 – 37.95.
In the Toss heat, the Ducks earned a 9.95 to set the pace for the high scores that would come.
In the Acro event, Baylor outscored the Ducks in the 5 and 6-Element heats with marks of 9.90 and 9.75, respectively. Oregon took the 7-Element heat with a score of 9.70, contributed by Alexis Cross, Taylor Galvin and Annelyse Robinson. The event was the only Bear victory of the day with a score of 29.20 – 28.90. After two, Oregon led the overall meet, 67.50 – 67.15.
With a winning score of just 0.05, the Ducks took the Pyramid event, 29.35 – 29.30. Oregon earned marks of 9.80 in both the Inverted and Open heats, while tying with the Bears in the Synchronized heat (9.75).
Heading into the half, Oregon led 96.85 – 96.45, the team's first halftime lead of the season so far.
In the Toss event, the Bears outscored the Ducks in the 450 Salto and Synchronized heats, but a 9.95 in the Open heat by Alexis Cross, Blaire Wilson, Taylor Galvin, Jalen Kirkland and Sabrina Peyton, solidified the Ducks' event win, 29.15 – 28.95.
The battle between the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams became even more heated in the Tumbling event. Both the Ducks and Bears claimed three events and contributed a perfect 10.00 apiece in the process. Senior Krista Phillips earned her first 10.00 of the season in the Open pass heat. For Baylor, Kiara Nowlin notched a 10.00 in the Aerial pass. In the end, Oregon would edge out the Bears by 0.225, 58.725 – 58.50, for the team's fourth event win of the day.
Oregon's Tumbling event score of 58.725 (start value: 60.00) is the third overall highest in the program's record books and officially the team's highest Tumbling regular-season score.
Heading into the Team event, both Oregon and Baylor had a start value of 110.00. The Ducks took the final event with a tally of 100.30 - 94.00.
The Ducks are undefeated in the Team event this season, never scoring below 100 points. Oregon's opponents have notched 94.15 (Hawaii Pacific), 92.17 (Quinnipiac), and 94.00 (Baylor).
What it Means: The No. 2-ranked Ducks took down No. 1 Baylor in a 2016 NCATA national championship rematch, besting the Bears by 7.125 points.
The win over Baylor is the Ducks first since the 2014-15 season, and officially breaks Baylor's head coach Fee Mulkey, formerly head of Oregon, undefeated streak. Mulkey is now 22-1 overall. Oregon head coach Chelsea Shaw is now 23-7 with Oregon, 31-12 overall.
The Ducks have scored a perfect 10.00 in every meet so far in the 2017 campaign.
Quotes: Head coach Chelsea Shaw -
Thoughts on win over Baylor...
"We are just so excited. Our girls worked so hard, and we have trained them so hard this year. They really believed they could achieve this goal from the beginning, so I'm happy to see that payoff."
Thoughts on the home crowd...
"Our home crowd was awesome today. We need the crowd, the girls feed off of them, and we love them. It's so fun to have the whole community supporting us - the atmosphere was great."
On Krista Phillips scoring a ten...
"Krista has trained so hard, and she's hard on herself too. I asked her how it felt to get a ten and she said, 'I'm not happy for me….I'm happy I earned those points for the team.' She has a super selfless mindset, which is an amazing trait to see in your athletes as a coach. She earned every bit of that moment today."
On going into halftime with the lead for the first time this season...
"We have really trained that first half in practice. In our meets so far, we haven't been executing as best as we can. You can't rely on the second half of a meet, anything can go either way, so we put a lot of emphasis on those heats and knew that we should try to pull a little bit ahead if we could, and not just bank on the second half."
Krista Phillips, Senior Base
Thoughts on the meet...
"Today was absolutely amazing. I think that we really left our hearts out there and gave it our all. That was what made it so great. Even if we didn't win, we still would have felt accomplished. The win was just an extra bonus."
On scoring a perfect ten on her run...
"I think for me, it was just great to do that for my team. Just getting that perfect ten was something that was really cool to do for them."
On if it is the biggest win in program history...
"I think it was a really great win, and something we'll remember for a very long time. It's been so long since we've been able to defeat Baylor, so I think it probably was [the biggest win in program history]."
