Ducks Win Season Finale Over OSU
11/08/14 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore ? Oregon (7-10-2, 3-7-1) earned a well-deserved 2-1 win over in-state rival Oregon State (0-17-3, 0-11-0) Friday afternoon at Pap? Field to send the Ducks' nine seniors off in winning fashion. Ashlee Schulz scored the go-ahead goal for the Ducks in the 84th minute.
How It Happened: To be expected, the game was a physical battle that saw both teams combine for 26 fouls and five yellow cards. Oregon State was the first to get on the board, but it was the result of an Oregon own goal. In the 27th minute Nikki Faris crossed the ball into the box and directly into a 1-on-1 battle between the Beavers' Helene Haavik and Riley Smith. In an effort to clear the ball, Smith scored the own goal, and Oregon State gained the temporary 1-0 lead.
Oregon would answer in the 44th minute when Kiyomi Cook teed up a perfectly struck corner kick. Even though the kick wasn't immediately put into the back of the net, the Ducks' Bri Pugh seized her chance when the ball eventually found her foot and she hammered the shot into the back of the net for her team-high third goal of the season. The Ducks scored the equalizer to even the score at 1-1, but the game winner would not come for another 40 minutes.
In the 84th minute Brooke Strawn was attempting to chase after a ball that a teammate played to the right corner, but she was tripped up and fouled by an Oregon State defender to give Oregon the free kick in a favorable position near the right corner of the box. Lilly Archer took the free kick and played a looping ball to the left corner of the goal where Schulz was perfectly positioned. The sophomore leaped into the air and headed the ball into the left part of the goal to give Oregon the 2-1 victory.
What It Means: The Ducks' win puts them at 7-10-2 (3-7-1) on the year, giving them 10th place in the Pac-12 over Oregon State and Utah. The win surpasses their conference win total from last year (2-8-1) and almost doubles last year's overall win total (4-12-3).
Come-From-Behind Win
The victory gives the Ducks their first come-from-behind win of the season. Oregon picked themselves up after an unfortunate own goal and produced two scores to tie their season high single-game goals.
Schulz's Goal
Schulz's first-career goal could not have come at a better time for the Ducks. The Springfield native had only attempted eight shots in her career before the game-winner, and now she is the 12th and final Duck to score a goal this season.
Pugh Moves Into 9th
With her goal, the senior from Highlands Ranch, Colo., finishes her career with 27 points (11 goals, 5 assists), good for 9th place in school history for career points. She moved past Beth Bowler (1998-2001, 25 points) and Andrea Valadez (2003-2005, 26 points) after tonight's score.
Steele Ends Exceptional Career
Steele moved into sole possession of third place in school history in goalkeeper wins (21) with the victory. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native ends her career first in both goals allowed average (1.15) and shutouts (17), and also third in saves (307).
Ongoing Rivalry
The latest chapter in the Civil War certainly did disappoint. The Ducks got to play in front the biggest crowd on the year at Pap? (781) and gained the edge in the all-time series against the Beavers (8-7-4)
The Seniors Went Out On Top
The victory saw Lilly Archer, Kiyomi Cook, Ryann Davie, Reilley Moore, Bri Pugh, Allie Rodriguez, Shanelle Simien, Riley Smith and Abby Steele play their last games on Pap? Field. All nine seniors played significant minutes in the win.
