UO Scores First, but Loses to Cal 2-1
11/03/14 | Women's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. – Caitlyn Wong scored in the 6th minute to give Oregon (6-10-2, 2-7-1) the temporary lead, but California (13-4-2, 5-3-2) answered with two goals of their own to win 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif., at Goldman Field.
How It Happened: The Ducks got on the board first when a Lilly Archer corner found its way to the box and immediately started causing problems for Cal. Wong got a shot off first, then Bri Pugh ripped one off 17 seconds later, but both were blocked. Wong got another chance 13 seconds later from close range and cashed in to give Oregon the 1-0 lead 5:57 into the game.
The Bears quickly responded in the 15th minute and tied the score at 1-1. Samantha Wiseman played a ball into the center of the box and Arielle Ship fired her shot into the left portion of the goal.
Cal scored the go-ahead goal in the 27th minute when Thelma Einarsdottir found the back of the net to give the Bears the 2-1 lead.
The score would stand, and Oregon was unable to come up with the equalizer. The Ducks outshot Cal in the second half (6-4), but none of their six shots were on goal. UO's best chance in the second half appeared to be in between the 71st and 72nd minutes. The Ducks saw Mia Gunter and Abby Morrow get off shots, but the chances along with three Oregon corners during that span did not prove prosperous with a goal.
What It Means: Wong's goal was the first of the season for the redshirt freshman who was playing only 50 miles from her hometown, Sunnyvale. With the goal, the Ducks now have 11 different players who have found the back of the net this year.
Notes: The goal is the fastest that the Ducks have scored all season (5:57)…Oregon saw four players record at least two shots (Pugh, Wong, Archer, and Morrow).
Up Next: Oregon will conclude their season Friday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. at home against Oregon State. The match will also be senior day out at Papé Field. Come help us honor our 9 seniors and make sure to wear YELLOW.
The first 100 fans will receive rally towels, $2 admission to all fans who wear yellow, $1 admission to all senior citizens and The Duck will be in attendance.
