
#20 Denver Defeats Ducks, 9-7

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon lacrosse team completed the 2010 regular season with a 9-7 loss to No. 20 ranked Denver. The Ducks (7-10, 3-3 MPSF) will now look toward the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in Denver, Colo., where they will likely be the No. 4 seed and battle UC Davis in the first round. The Pioneers (12-4, 6-0), who secured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title by going undefeated in conference play, will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament, have a first-round bye and could also be the Ducks' opponent in the second round. Oregon defeated UC Davis 14-6 on the road last weekend.
Against the conference-winning Pioneers, Oregon held tough, especially in the first half and early second half. Down 6-4 at halftime, the Ducks cut the Denver lead to just one on Jana Drummond's second goal of the game with 14:31 left to play in the game and then again on Drummond's third score with 8:36 remaining. But the Pioneers scored a pair of unanswered goals within 37 seconds of one another to help put away the game, even though Bina Barrett would connect on a score with 1:33 left in the game.
Oregon was paced by Drummond's three scores and Bina Barrett's three points on two goals and one assist. Alex Breiner also had a multi-point game with one goal and one assist. In the net, freshman Salliebeth Finnegan had one of the best games of her career, allowing just nine goals to the conference's top team and making five saves.
Kara Secora led the way for the Pioneers with three goals and Lexi Sanders continued scoring tear with two goals. Goalkeeper Ashley Harman made five saves while surrendering seven scores.
In team stats, Denver had the edge in clears (13-11), free position goals (3-2) and turnovers (13-16). Oregon had the advantage in shots (23-17), draw controls (11-6), saves (6-5) and fouls (34-23). Both teams had 24 ground balls.
