Soccer Drops 4-0 Decision at Central Connecticut State

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The University of Oregon women's soccer team opened the weekend with a 4-0 loss Friday afternoon at Central Connecticut State.
The two teams were scoreless until late in the first half when Blue Devil Kelly Shimmin scored at 38:49, followed by another goal less than a minute later at 39:30 by Jess McCavanaugh.
Central Connecticut added another pair of quick goals early in the second half by Shimmin at 52:14 on an assist by McCavanaugh, and by McCavanaugh on an assist by Tara O'Brien at 56:30. The win raised CCSU, a NCAA tourney second-round advancer last year, to 4-3 on the year, and lowered the Ducks to 1-3-1.
"It was a disappointing loss, because our confidence really unraveled at a few points," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "We have to dust ourselves off, and play hard on Sunday against another worthy opponent."
Individually for the Ducks, sophomore forward Andrea Valadez led the team in shots (4) and shots on goal (2), while junior goalkeeper Domenique Lainez came up with nine saves in her 90:00 of duty. For the hosts, Shimmin and McCavanaugh led in shots with seven and five, respectively, and five and four shots on goal. Goalkeeper Sabrina Mariani had five saves and played the entire game.
Team-wise, CCSU held a 24-13 edge in shots, 15-6 advantage in shots on goal, 5-2 edge in corner kicks and 20-16 advantage in fouls. Two home players - Megan Kavanaugh (49:00) and Julianna DiPlacido (51:51) received yellow cards, as did Oregon junior Katie Abrahamson (85:44).
The Ducks have another contest on the road in Connecticut this weekend when they take on returning NCAA runner-up UConn in Storrs on Sunday afternoon. More info on the game is available at the www.UConnHuskies.com website. This weekend marks the first meetings for the Ducks with both teams.
