LOS ANGELES - The University of Oregon women's soccer team fell to USC, 2-0, Friday afternoon in Troy to open Pacific-10 Conference play.
After a scoreless first half, Tina Sutorius scored early in the second period at 45:57 on a header off a corner kick by Jocelyn Leche. Eleven minutes later USC added an insurance goal at 56:52 by Jocelyn Hein on a deflected shot with assists to Sutorius and Lauren Shepherdson.
"They threw a lot of people forward into their offense, so we felt pretty good being able to withstand that in the first half," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "In the second half, they caught us at an inopportune time early in the half, then did it again a little bit later. The stats didn't indicate the level of play between the teams, which I thought was fairly even."
Shot-takers for Oregon included redshirt sophomore forward Andrea Valadez (2), sophomore midfielder Sabrina DeMonte (1) and junior midfielder Cristan Higa (1). Valadez was credited with two shots on goal, and DeMonte was awarded one.
Forward Tina Sutorius and Rosa Ann Tantillo had USC game highs in shots (4) and shots on goal (2).
In goal, Duck redshirt junior Domenique Lainez posted four saves, and Trojan keeper Veronica Simonton collected three saves.
Team-wise, USC held edges in shots (15-4), corner kicks (6-5), fouls (13-8) and offsides (2-1), and Oregon held an advantage in saves (4-3),
Friday's outcome raised USC to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0 in Pac-10 play, and Oregon fell to 3-7-1 and 0-1 in the league.
Looking ahead, the Ducks play at returning NCAA final four qualifier UCLA, Sun., at 1 pm in Westwood.
