Soccer Loses to No. 8 UCLA, 6-0
10/10/04 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES - The University of Oregon closed its opening weekend of conference play Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 loss at No. 8 UCLA.
UCLA scored three goals in each of the first and second periods, including a hat trick of goals by Kendal Billingsley (26:37, 47:00 and 86:25) on the team's second, fourth and sixth goals. Other goals came from Kim Devine (9:16), Danesha Adams (31:01) and Bristyn Davis (54:55).
Oregon's best chance for scoring came in the 17th minute when senior defender and tri-captain Christine Mintz took a penalty kick, but the ball hit the crossbar and bounced back into play.
"Today was one of the most bizarre first halves I've seen," Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "We gave them a goal early when Dom (enique Lainez) mishandled a cross and dropped it in the goal. She's been very good of late, but just misplayed it. We battled back, and Christine then missed a penalty that hit the crossbar. We then gave them a penalty kick which they converted, and then Katie whiffed on a backpass to create their third goal. Although we weren't playing that badly, we were down 3-0 on some critical misplays, and to their credit they capitalized on them. In both first halves this weekend, we did a decent job of creating chances, but I'm not happy in not converting - we need to penalize our opposition and make them play from behind."
Freshman Aimee Goss led Oregon for the first time in her career in shots (3), and three others - Mintz, junior defender Katie Abrahamson and freshman defender Dylann Tharp - had single attempts. Goss, Mintz and Abrahamson tied for the team lead in shots on goal (1).
In goal for the Ducks, redshirt junior Domenique Lainez came up with with six of Oregon's nine saves in 60 minutes of play (but allowed five goals), and sophomore Emily Marrer wrapped up three saves and allowed one score in the remaining 30 minutes. UCLA keepers Arianna Criscione and Valerie Henderson had one and two saves, respectively.
"In the second half, we decided to give some people an opportunity to play who hadn't seen as much action lately," Steffen said. "Emily (Marrer) was solid and had a good effort. She was thrown into a very difficult situation, and responded when she was tested on a couple of their chances. Aimee (Goss) was pretty effective and managed to find some wide spaces to exploit. She's quick technically and decent on the ball. She's learning how to get more involved offensively, especially with her ability to receive the ball in an opportunistic position on the field."
UCLA's Bristyn Davis led the home team in shots (4), and tied with Billingsley for the game high in shots on goal (3). Altogether, nine Bruins, including eight starters, attempted shots for the returning NCAA final four qualifier.
In the team comparisons, UCLA owned advantages in shots (20-7), shots on goal (15-3), corner kicks (10-4) and fouls (13-8), and Oregon owned a 9-3 edge in saves.
The loss lowered the Ducks to 3-8-1 overall and 0-2 in Pac-10 action, and returning conference champion UCLA improved to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Looking ahead, the Ducks host the annual in-state clash with Oregon State, Fri., Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at Pape' Field in Eugene in The Civil War Sponsored by Your Northwest Dodge Dealers.
