Garbin Lifts UO Soccer to 1-0 Win over Rice

EUGENE, Ore. ? Nicole Garbin scored in the 35th minute and Domenique Lainez made six saves to record her first career shutout as Oregon defeated Rice 1-0 on the final day of the Oregon Fall Classic Sunday at Pape Field. The Ducks are off to a 2-0 start for the first time in three years, while Rice fell to 0-2.
Andrea Valadez set up Garbin by tipping the ball past the Owl defense. Garbin then ran on to the ball, made a move to the left to get by Rice goalkeeper Lauren Shockley, and sent the ball home from 15 yards out.
The teams went scoreless from that point on, thanks to solid, if not spectacular play from Lainez, who made four of her six saves in the second half. It was Oregon's first shutout since blanking Washington State 4-0 in the final game of the 2001 season.
"I'm pleased with the results, but not in our play overall today," said Oregon coach Bill Steffen, whose team exhibited much more firepower in Friday's 4-1 defeat of Boise State. "We didn't play as consistent or together today. But the goal was to get two wins this weekend and we can feel good about accomplishing that."
Oregon out-shot Rice 14-11 and kept the pressure on with seven corner kicks, compared to one for Rice. Mele French led the Ducks with four shots, while Cristan Higa attempted three.
Garbin, Higa and defender Christine Mintz were named to the all-tournament team.
In the first game Sunday, San Francisco defeated Boise State 6-0, as all-tournament forward Annika Schmidt had a goal and a pair of assists.
Oregon and San Francisco will meet next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pape Field. Prior to that match, Oregon will host an exhibition against Ghana's World Cup team Wednesday at 7 p.m.
