Ducks beat University of San Francisco, 2-1
09/07/03 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's soccer team claimed its first 3-0 start in school history after edging San Francisco, 2-1 at Pape' Field, Sunday afternoon under partly cloudy, 58-degree skies.
In their fourth straight match at home (including an exhibition against Ghana this week), the Ducks rallied from a 1-0 first-half deficit with two goals of their own just after the 30-minute mark. The win raise UO's all-time record against the Dons to 2-0-1, while USF also fell to 3-2 on the season. "It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but it was another nice step in the right direction." Oregon head coach Bill Steffen said. "We did some very good things at times, but also didn't capitalize on several great chances and could have been ahead much more. San Francisco did a good job clearing some dangerous balls off the line, and the longer the game went on, the tougher they got." San Francisco opened scoring with a goal by speedy forward Shuree Hyatt at 19:35, a 17-yard line drive from the center of the box to the left corner. Assists were awarded to midfielder Annika Schmidt on a long aerial lead pass to midfielder Chelsea Hunt who dribbled several yards before deferring to Hyatt. The Ducks responded less than 15 minutes later as sophomore midfielder Cristan Higa poked in a grounder from 3 yards out center to the left post for her first career goal. The score was set up by a corner kick by sophomore defender Carlie Ashcraft from the right corner that was immediately tapped sideways three yards by sophomore midfielder Caitlin Gamble. Less than two minutes later, redshirt freshman midfielder Sabrina DeMonte added her first Duck score with a 6-yard attempt that skipped in from the right side. The Torrance, Calif., native and Harbor City JC transfer capitalized on a 15-yard left-to-right cross from redshirt freshman Andrea Valadez, who was in turn set up by an upfield aerial up the left central midfield from redshirt sophomore Nicole Garbin. "I'm glad I got that first one so the monkey is off my back," DeMonte said. "I've been working really hard to keep improving and this gives me confidence to keep working harder. I went right for the ball when I saw it slip between the defender and tried to put it away quickly. The coaches have been trying to get me to attack more and create more chances, and I'm glad I could achieve that today." Garbin's point raised her team-leading tally to 6 on the season and her career tally to 21 points in 21 games. The Wailuku, Hawai'i native now ranks sixth all-time for the Ducks and passed former Duck Julie McLellan (seventh, 20) Sunday. The Ducks had additional opportunities to pad their lead throughout the game as Lindsey Werdell missed right on a penalty kick at 27:20, Caitlin Gamble floated an open-goal attempt over the goal by at 42:55, and sophomore Mele French caromed a 25-yard arc'er off the crossbar at 64:13. On defense, redshirt sophomore Domenique Lainez continued to shine in net for the Ducks. The San Bruno, Calif., native came up with several blocks at various locations both close and away from the net, besides her two saves on shots on goal. "I just did what I had to do," Lainez said. "I thought it was a good effort overall, but there are still things I need to work, especially going into another tough Pac-10 season. Looking back on their score, I should have come out and challenged a little earlier." Overall for the Ducks, 16 players saw action, including junior transfer Erin Engelhardt who led the home team reserves in shots (3) "It's important that the team rallied today," Steffen said, "and I liked the way we continued to apply offensive pressure late and not get tentative. Carlie and Christine are really continuing to develop in our backfield, and our forwards up front - Nicole, Andrea and Mele - are creating more and more chances. It was nice to see Sabrina get her first goal because she's really developed at a quick pace since she arrived in the winter. Cristan is always a consistent, high-level and positive player on the field, so it was good she got a reward for that today. We also saw Erin stepping into the mix offensively. However, all of players have to be better on finishing. Domenique had a fine game, and she's becoming more confident, experienced and sophisticated in her positioning. Even with the field slickness, she still played a lot of balls very well with her feet." Individually for San Francisco, Chelsea Hunt led the offense in shots (6) and shots on goal (2). Goalkeeper Jennifer Orantes ended with four saves and two goals allowed in her 90:00 of play. Team-wise, the Ducks held advantage in shots (16-13), shots on goal (7-3) and corner kicks (9-4), and San Francisco led in saves (4-2) and fouls (9-7). Looking ahead, the Ducks head south for to their first road contests of the season, and play at Pacific, Fri., Sept. 12 and Sacramento State, Sun., Sept. 14.
