Duck Soccer Opens Season with 4-1 Win against Boise State
08/29/03 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. ? Nicole Garbin scored one goal and assisted on another as the Oregon women's soccer team opened the 2003 season with a 4-1 defeat of Boise State Friday night at Pape' Field.
"It was a good way to start and one of the really good things is that we got better as the match went on," said Oregon coach Bill Steffen. "We were a bit timid on defense early, but we made a tactical adjustment."
Sophomore Valerie Mayer got Oregon on the scoreboard in the 34th minute, tapping in a Carlie Ashcraft pass from five yards out to give the Ducks a 1-0 halftime lead. It was Mayer's first career goal.
Oregon erupted for three goals in the second half. A set of long passes led to Caitlin Gamble's score in the 57th minute. Cristan Higa sent a long ball down the left side to Andrea Valadez, who then crossed the ball to Gamble in the middle of the field and Gamble then bounced a hard shot off a BSU defender into the net.
Garbin, a sophomore who had not played in nearly two years after suffering a knee injury during last summer's preseason camp, scored in an unusual way in the 75th minute. Bronco keeper Kim Parker was out past the 18 yard line with all her defenders close to midfield as Garbin collected a loose ball just a few yards into Oregon territory. She tapped it past the defense and Parker charged, but Garbin lofted a soft chip from 40 yards out just over Parker's shoulder and the ball rolled across the goal line for her first score since September 30, 2001.
"It felt great," said Garbin, who set an Oregon single-match record with nine shots. "That was something I had been visualizing about all summer. I really wanted to score in my first game back." Garbin broke Beth Bowler's mark of eight shots, set Aug. 31, 2001, versus Gonzaga.
Garbin also assisted Mele French's score in the 80th minute. She looped a pass over the defense as French ran through and French then beat Parker from 15 yards.
"We created a lot of chances in the first half, but we didn't put them away," said Steffen. "In the second half, we did."
Boise State capped the scoring on somewhat of a rarity. In the 89th minute, Megan McCoy scored directly on a corner kick, as her pass in deflected off Oregon keeper Domenique Lainez's hands and into the net. The goal spoiled Lainez's bid for a shut out in her first career start. The sophomore did make five stops before McCoy's goal to collect her first career win.
In the first game of the U of O Tournament, San Francisco defeated Rice 1-0 on a Ashley Davies goal in the 37th minute.
The tournament concludes Sunday with Oregon playing Rice at 2 p.m. Boise State and San Francisco open the day by meeting at noon.
