Top-Two Battle Ends in Oregon Loss
04/06/26 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
EUGENE, Ore. – In the regular season finale, the No. 2 Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team fell short of a win in the second yearly meeting with No. 1 ranked Baylor. The Ducks posted their best score of the season in the 277.680-286.810 loss on Monday night.
The acro event was the highlight for the Ducks (5-2), where they were able to outscore the Bears (9-0) in the sole victory of the evening. Family and friends filled the stands of Matthew Knight Arena as the top-two teams in the nation put one of the most competitive displays of the season on a night dedicated to the 11 seniors in the Oregon program.
"As you can see from the girls when they're being recognized, there's a lot of love for this senior class," head coach Taylor Susnara said. "We talked about this being the last time in Matthew Knight Arena with this team and so we honed in on that from start to finish and I think that showed in their execution."
How It Happened: The Ducks started off strong, outscoring the Bears in the compulsory acro heat with a season-high 9.700, contributing to the team's best compulsory total of the season.
The UO squad outscored the Bears in the acro event, delivering a 29.250 total score to the visitors' 29.200. The Ducks trailed by just 0.5 points leading into the third and final segment of the first half. The dynamic duo of Cassidy Cu and Angelica Martin bookended the event with scores of 9.900 and 9.850.
Despite a solid showing from Oregon, capped by a 9.900 open heat from Ashlyn Parlett, Emily Rezner, Ava Gowdy, Blessyn McMorris and Selah Bell on top, the top-ranked opponents pulled ahead in the pyramid event as the Ducks chased 96.950-97.450 entering halftime.
In the opening heat of the second half, Carly Garcia topped the 450 Salto toss and was helped by Parlett, Rezner, Charlotte Lippa and Molly Dallagher to record the best toss score in any heat this season. Baylor pulled away in the tumbling event, but Briya Alvarado's six-element score of 9.850 could not go unnoticed as she turned in the highest mark by a Duck in the penultimate event.
The seniors were not the only notable class of the evening, as a pair of freshmen made their debuts. Addison Brodie's name was added to the quad tumbling pass alongside Parlett, Shea Barnes and Avery Dodd. Regan Grigsby stepped up to fill in for the team event.
"Both freshmen, Reagan Grigsby and Addison Brodie, have been working really hard this whole year," Susnara said. "Unfortunately, we did have two pretty significant injuries with some of our athletes going into this meet. We were able to call on them today, and they stepped up and did a really great job."
Oregon trailed by a point entering the team event, and despite their best team score of the season, were not able to overcome Baylor's growing lead.
"Going into the championships, we will just be drilling things and putting a lot of emphasis on our team event," Susnara said. "I think the team event has given us our struggles throughout the season, and that is something we need to work on mentally and rep it out."
Up Next: The Ducks await the NCATA's seeding to determine their place at the 2026 Championships hosted by Azusa Pacific April 23-26.
