Ducks Open Big Ten Play at STC

UO hosts Maryland, Rutgers this weekend.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team opens Big Ten play at UO Student Tennis Center this weekend, beginning with a Friday matchup with No. 49 Maryland (11:30 a.m.) before a Sunday tilt with 64th-ranked Rutgers (11 a.m.).
Oregon (8-3, 0-0) looks to remain unbeaten at home this spring, as the Ducks are off to a 6-0 start in Eugene. The Terrapins and Scarlet Knights will represent the fourth and fifth consecutive ranked teams UO will face after playing three ranked foes at the Red-Blue Invite in Tucson, Ariz., in its last action.

Despite going 1-2 over three matches at the Red-Blue Invite, the Ducks picked up their first ranked win of the season in a 4-1 win over No. 61 Denver. Oregon suffered two tightly contested losses, a 4-2 decision to No. 60 Grand Canyon and a 4-3 heartbreaker to 40th-ranked Arizona.
Through 11 dual matches, UO has compiled a 36-12 overall singles record while its doubles teams are a combined 19-6. Seven players in the Ducks' singles lineup boast winning records, including a 9-1 mark from sophomore Bridget Mihulka and a 6-1 record from redshirt senior Olivia Symons.
Oregon's freshman doubles duo of Hadley Appling and Virginia Crocker are a team-best 6-1 so far this spring, playing every match at the third position. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto are 5-1 and the top tandem of Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons are 7-4.
Maryland is led by Oliwia Orlinska, who checks in at No. 89 in the latest ITA singles rankings. Orlinska is 7-1 so far in the dual season at the top spot in the Terrapins' lineup. The Terps' doubles tandem of Emma Ghirardato and Ema Kovacivic are ranked 23rd in the doubles standings and are 5-0 this spring.
Rutgers is 6-3 this spring with Svannah Cohen turning in a team-leading six singles wins. Zuzanna Frankowska is close behind with a 5-1 singles mark while boasting a 7-2 doubles record with partner Mai Nguyen.
The Ducks suffered a hard-fought 4-3 road loss to the Scarlet Knights last season, the first-ever meeting between the teams. UO and Maryland have split two all-time meetings, with the Terrapins winning 4-3 a season ago.
