Ducks Pick Up First Ranked Win

UO takes down No. 61 Denver, falls at No. 40 Arizona at Red-Blue Invite.
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon women's tennis team picked up its first ranked win of the season, taking down. 61st-ranked Denver to begin the day before pushing No. 40 Arizona in a 4-3 defeat to complete the two-day Red-Blue Invite at LaNelle Robson Tennis Courts.
After completing the doubles portion of its match with Denver on Friday afternoon, Oregon entered Saturday's singles matches with a 1-0 lead. The Ducks completed their first win over a ranked team this season with three straight-set victories, coming on courts two, five and six.
After the Pioneers (6-3) evened the team score at 1-1, Hinata Furutani and Bridget Mihulka put the Ducks back in front with wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Mihulka kept her unbeaten singles mark intact, moving to 9-0 this spring, while Furutani improved her dual singles record to 5-1.
Redshirt senior Olivia Symons clinched the fourth and deciding team point for UO, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-3 on court two. Symons improved to 5-1 this spring at the second spot in the lineup.
Later in the afternoon, Oregon took on host and 40th-ranked Arizona, where the Ducks pushed the Wildcats to the brink before suffering a 4-3 loss.
After splitting all six singles matches, the winner of the doubles point would decide the match. Furutani and partner Juliet Santitto gave their team the early advantage with a 6-1 victory on court two, while the other two matches remained tight. Arizona fended off the Ducks' upset bid, winning by 6-4 scores at both No. 1 and No. 3.
In singles action, UO picked up team points from Crocker, Santitto and Symons. Santitto played the first dual singles match of the singles, sliding into the sixth spot in the lineup as Mihulka moved up to No. 4. Santitto overcame a first-set loss to earn a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.
Crocker, at No. 3, and Symons, playing on court two, each won in straight sets. Two of Arizona's three singles wins came in three sets.
Next up, the Ducks open Big Ten play on Friday, March 6 against Maryland at the UO Student Tennis Center (11:30 a.m. PT).
