Halftime Adjustments Don't Yield Equalizer For Ducks
10/08/26 | Women's Soccer
Oregon soccer sustained more pressure Thursday after making second-half adjustments but ultimately lost 1-0 to Penn State.
EUGENE, Ore. — Halftime adjustments paid dividends for the Oregon soccer team Thursday, but an unlucky carom sent Penn State away from Papé Field as the victors.
The Ducks were more successful mounting sustained pressure in the second half after changing their formation at halftime Thursday. But though their typically stout defense didn't allow an official shot on goal in the match, a shot that caromed off the post and into the goal off a UO player made the difference in a 1-0 win for the Nittany Lions.
The goal came in the 59th minute, during a second half in which Oregon doubled its shot total from the first half and outshot Penn State, 6-5. But none was able to find the back of the net.

"We need to get better at some of those key moments and meet the moment," UO coach Tracy Joyner said. "But the fact that we're generating great chances against really quality teams is a positive."
How It Happened: The Ducks were outshot 5-3 in the first half, when Penn State's pressure produced eight corner kicks. The Nittany Lions were employing a different formation than Oregon had scouted, and the Ducks didn't want to change on the fly until they got into the halftime locker room.
"Second half, came out with a two-front and we were able to generate a lot more chances going forward," Joyner said. "Played really well defensively again, generated some good chances."

The Ducks generated three of the first four shots after halftime, one each for Cloe Chase, Ellie Felt and Maddie Sharrer. Penn State then shifted momentum and got off all five of its second-half shots in a span of 17 minutes, before Oregon went back on the attack looking for the equalizer.
Notable: Senior Lauren Kenny made her 2026 debut after recovering from an injury. … Oregon held an opponent without a shot on goal for the third time this season, and for the first time in Big Ten play. … The Ducks' eight goals allowed in 13 games is a record in the modern era of the program. … Penn State's nine total corner kicks were the most by a UO opponent this season.
Up Next: The Ducks will host Iowa and celebrate their Senior Day on Sunday (1 p.m., B1G+).
