Ducks Head To Big Ten Play With Convincing Win
03/04/25 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. — Dominic Hellman and Mason Neville continued to power the Oregon offense, while the Ducks pitching staff extended No. 10 Oregon's scoreless innings streak to 20 in a dominating 15-0 nonconference win over Utah Tech on Tuesday at PK Park.
Hellman belted a pair of home runs to give him five in the last five games, while Neville hit his team-leading seventh homer to lead off the top of the first.
Seven Oregon pitchers combined to allow no runs on just five hits with starter Ian Umlandt going 4.2 innings while allowing four hits and striking out three. Julien Hernandez picked up the win tossing a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
How It Happened: The Ducks did not waste any time jumping on top. Neville, the leadoff hitter, launched his seventh home run of the season on a 3-2 pitch over the center-field wall for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Ducks tacked a couple more runs on later in the inning. After a Jacob Walsh one-out base on balls, Anson Aroz doubled into the left-field gap scoring Walsh from first. Maddox Molony followed with a single to left to score Aroz and give UO a 3-0 lead.
Hellman, fresh off being named the national hitter of the week by the NCBWA earlier in the afternoon, launched his fourth home run of the season into the Utah Tech bullpen for a 4-0 lead after two.
Utah Tech got more of a taste of Hellman in the fourth inning. After Carter Garate started a two-out rally with a bunt single and Neville walked, Hellman slugged his second homer of the game to push UO's lead to 7-0.
Oregon added four more runs in the fifth inning. After a Molony one-out walk and a single by Burke-Lee Mabeus, Jeffery Heard picked up an RBI with a single through the right side. Ryan Cooney added an RBI on a fielder's choice, before Garate tripled and drove in a run and Neville picked up Garate with a double to right field.
The Ducks got back on the board scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back singles by Cooney and Garate set up Neville for an RBI single to make it 12-0. After an out, Walsh and Aroz delivered consecutive two-out RBI singles to chase the Trailblazers reliever. Molony greeted the new pitcher with an RBI single of his own to push the lead top 15-0.
Box Score Notes: Oregon started the same lineup that scored 35 runs in the first game of last Saturday's doubleheader … Hellman's five home runs over the last five games came over a span of just 20 at-bats and 26 plate appearances … Oregon's back-to-back shutouts are the first for the Ducks since March 12-13, 2021, when Oregon won at Oregon State 7-0 and 3-0 on consecutive days.
On Deck: Oregon travels to Southern California for its first ever Big Ten Conference series against former Pac-12 rival USC. The Ducks and Trojans will play a three-game series starting Friday at Great Park in Irvine.

On how the team is firing...
"We're improving. No, we're not there yet. We're improving, but it's fun being with these guys. These guys are awesome. The love to work and we're asking them to improve every single day and that's what they are doing. It's just fun being in the dugout with this group."
On Ian Umlandt's performance...
" Real solid performance. He just throws strikes and he has a lot of wiggle on the ball. His velocity was a up a little bit. He's just a real competitor and he's a lot of fun to play behind for those guys."
On the bullpen arms tonight...
"They looked really good. It was fun to be around and get some of the older guys out there again and get those guys going. We saw some of the freshmen get out there and get a chance. Tyler (Jones) at the end. He didn't pitch this last weekend. He played a little bit, but he didn't pitch. He's a talented kid and had a chance to get him on the dirt today. It's huge to play these midweek games where we can get a lot of players, especially pitchers to get them in there on the mound and see what they got."
Grayson Grinsell
On preparation for USC…
"It's the same as it is for any other weekend. I mean, we're gonna do the same amount of film, same amount of scout, and prepare every day at practice like we do every weekend."
On goals for this weekend…
"Just keep building on what's been going on this season, I mean, you know, going in ready to go, giving us a good start on Friday night and keep it going throughout the weekend."
Mason Neville
On being in leadoff spot…
"Yeah, it's been good. I like to set the tone for the rest of the lineup and second time through, a lot of the time Carter's on base or some other guys are on base, and so I have an opportunity to drive in runs for the team and stuff like that. But really out of the gate, I enjoy leading off and just kind of setting the tone, like I said."
On confidence level for the lineup…
"Yeah, one through nine. I mean, even the guys coming In late in the game, or whatever it is, you just have confidence in those guys. Saw everyone play and compete in the fall, and so we know what we have. And just seeing everyone has success right now and continuing to roll with that, it's been sweet."
