Ducks Show Heart After Slow Start
03/16/25 | Women's Lacrosse
Oregon trailed by five after the first quarter Sunday, before losing 10-6 to Rutgers at Papé Field.
EUGENE, Ore. — An early deficit proved too deep Sunday, despite a courageous comeback attempt by the Oregon lacrosse team.
The Ducks trailed by five after the first quarter at Papé Field, and cut the lead for Rutgers to as little as two before ultimately falling, 10-6. The UO women outscored the Scarlet Knights over the final three quarters, 5-4, but it wasn't enough after being outscored 6-1 in the opening period.
"Like I just told the team — moments of greatness out there today, and then moments where we just kind of had our brains off," UO coach Jessica Drummond said. "Playing against a Big Ten team, we've got to take advantage of every opportunity that we get. Both teams made mistakes, and we've got to figure out how to capitalize when we have that opportunity."
Oregon (5-4, 0-2 Big Ten) got two goals each from Bri Carrasquillo and Lyla Hurley on a rainy afternoon at Papé Field that saw the teams combine for 53 turnovers. Paige Crowther had five saves for the Ducks, all in the second half, including three while holding Rutgers without a goal in the final period.
"Paige fought her butt off — having a scoreless fourth quarter is awesome," Drummond said. "It was really great for us to get those saves in those last moments, giving opportunities for us in that fourth quarter to kind of chip away."
How It Happened: Hurley got Oregon on the scoreboard for the first time with 4:42 left in the opening period, ending a 4-0 run by Rutgers to open the game. A goal with 10 seconds left in the quarter gave the Scarlet Knights a 6-1 lead entering the second.
That's when the Ducks got going. Carrasquillo scored less than a minute into the quarter, Hurley found the back of the net for the first time less than 2 minutes later, and Carrasquillo made it 6-4 with 9:25 to go before halftime. Rutgers grabbed momentum back, however, and took an 8-4 lead into halftime.
Liv Kozitza opened scoring in the third quarter, getting Oregon back within 8-5. But again Rutgers scored the last two goals of the quarter, and it was 10-5 entering the fourth.
Crowther had a save less than 5 minutes into the fourth that kept the Ducks within five, and Alex Matsuoka scored on a free position shot with 7:04 to play, making it 10-6. Crowther made two more saves in the final 70 seconds, but Oregon couldn't cut into the lead any further.
